Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Question about car tax

    Hi all,
I am considering buying a car from a friend of a friend.
It's an Opel Corsa, it's cheap, has a year left on the NCT and will be cheap to insure.
The only problem is that the tax ran out last summer and the owner didn't bother renewing it because she got a new job in her hometown and so could walk to work instead of driving.
The car was still used on private land (the family have a farm) for teaching an 18 year old basic driving.

The owner said she will go to the Gardai and get a cert to state the car was off the public roads since the summer and that this will mean I only have to tax it from now on (i.e. there won't be any backlog of tax to be paid).
    Is this correct?

Once its signed over to you you only have to tax it from when you bought it anyway so I wouldnt worry about it not being taxed

I'd be more worried about an 18 year old learning to drive in it on fields or farm roads then the lack of tax. Who knows what sort of damage it's had.

I'd make sure to have it checked out by someone who knows cars before buying, especially when your buying from a friend of a friend it's not worth the hassle if something goes bang soon after you get it.

As already stated, the new registered owner only has to tax the car from the begining of the month that they became the registered owner.
