    Hi everyone,
am new on here so please be gentle!:)
Is there anywhere in this country who do sak yant style, or khmer script prayers?
long story short, have done thai boxing a long time (10 odd years) and have wanted nearly as long,(am into the spiritual end of things too) but never actually went ahead with it. a couple of months ago my little brother, and training partner, died of cancer, and Ive decided to go ahead and get 1 sort of as a memorial(ish).
any help would be appreciated. thanks.:)

    Hi,

Sorry for your loss. As Sak Yant tattoos usually have a rough and complex look to them usually I would say most artists in Dublin could have a good stab at one. It would be quite different to doing a general script tattoo due to its compact style I would imagine. Artcore tattoo, Snakebite and Colourworks are all studios I'd recommend.
Having said that if I were you and wanted this tattoo and wanted it done properly I would go to a convention where Lard Yao Tattoo are operating. The guy who is Lard Yao tattoo tattoos in the traditional way and learned his trade in Lard Yao prison in Thailand, I think he's Dutch or German himself. He seems like a nice dude, dont let the prison thing put you off. This is the best option for an authentic tattoo. Its done with bamboo and needles as opposed to a gun.

Go to someone with really solid linework. I'd say Tommy in Classic Ink would be your best bet. The Italians in Dublin Art Tattoo could do a nice job of it too.

get a real one in a temple in thailand, getting a tattoo artist defeats the whole purpose of the sak yant ,if your into the spiritual side of it surely you would understand the meaning and importance of a monk doing it for you.a tatto artist doing t in my eyes undermines it and commercializes.....

you would have to be out of your mind to get tattooed at one of these temples. why not burn incense and share needles at home?

you know what is worse than commercialization? Hepatitis.

was my original plan, while training over there (with my bro), but not looking likely this year now. Have kinda changed plan now to get it done by an experienced (in that type of thing) artist soon, then have it done over and blessed in a temple when i get over there. (just so you dont think i know what im gettin into ;))
    thanks for input guys:)

Then why dont you wait till your there next, its not a real sak yant otherwise, dont be impatient it will have more of a meaning/story to it

are we just ignoring hepatitis, are we? can't get it if it's done by real holy men?

This is a serious risk. The hygiene/sterilization techniques used by these monks is not something you'd accept from a tattoo parlour.

True ,but thats how its done. a real sak yant is done by a monk in a temple everyting else is a fake knock off and not a real sak yant.

Try Marcus in "Red Dragon" tattoos in Clondalkin. Top artist and a long background in martial arts. Also there's a guy works there is a Buddhist and ex Muay Thai champion so if anyone could do it I'm sure they can.

Hey Bft, firstly and most importantly condolances on your tragic loss of your brother and training partner.

If this is only for decorative purposes, then I would go with some of the recommendations already made but,

if as you say, you are into the spiritual side of Sak Yant, then the ONLY place to have one done is in Thailand by a recommended monk (different monks specialise in different types of Sak Yant). Please understand if the prayer is to have ANY significance it MUST be a person of good character/living that tattoo's you.

Sak Yant are VERY powerful and can have a very negative role in your life if done wrong/incorrectly. This is very hard to put in words and isn't something I expect people here to understand. Best of luck regardless

I am going to keep saying it, because it needs to be said, it seems.

thanks Dave, these were kinda my thoughts too, just thought maybe there was somewhere here or in europe, that could do them properly, along with all the rituals that are involved. wasnt sure if the monk actually done the physical work, or just the spiritual. (kinda overseeing the actual tattooing)

Not that i was ignoring you, sorry! :o And it is a very valid point!
this was kinda why i was lookin for somewhere here (or thereabouts) to do it. (hygeine wise its possibly a more reliable option!!)
just to put your mind at ease, i'm 30, married, with 2 little girls, so the last thing i want or am planning on getting is any sort of nastiness!!:D

Of course it is and I agree.

But the way you say it, it's only a problem you'ed find in Thailand. And while on that subject, have you been there and seen the monks work in person or are your accussations based on anecdotal evidence?
wasnt sure if the monk actually done the physical work, or just the spiritual.

Yes, the monks do the tattoo themselves (in most cases) and they pray while tattooing the person, that is why it is so hard to find someone to do it outside of there.

One doesn't need to disprove the use of new needles/an autoclave in any significant number of temples. I could only find mention of one, do you have some?.... Or any evidence of any training in cross contamination amongst the monks?

And of course, these are things you should want from any tattooist, even if you think they are a holy man.
