Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Anyone else notice this?

You can now embedd YouTube Videos in Gmail emails.

The person can play the video within the Email without leaving their Gmail account.

    Class.

Yup, but for years I have wanted this feature.

Posted in a few blogs where people were trying to develop codes that would allow it.

It was annoying to just have send a YouTube link.

Wonder if this is a loophole for YouTube in workplaces now?

The only downside is that most certainty Spam will increase.

Video email marketing is bound to take off.

    Eh, no it didn't.

A lab fix came in a year ago so that you could display a YouTube video but you would still be directed to YouTube if you clicked it.

In November they brought it in partially but you still had to go into settings to switch it on. Was useless as nobody had it switched on.

Here's just two articles where people were trying to find solutions on getting video in emails:

    http://www.email-marketing-reports.com/iland/2009/01/new-video-email-options-in-2009.html

    http://www.pinpointe.com/blog/embedding-video-in-email-overview

Now all Gmail accounts will display a video (or multiple videos) in an email once the full URL is included.

If you get Boards emails when a subscribed thread is replied to, then that too will display the YouTube video in the email, saving you having to log-in to view it.

    Gtalk's an application, an add-on.

Getting Video embedded into email is something that people have been working on for years.

In that article above there is a graph that shows that only Apple had a solution and obviously it only worked on Apple products.

Here's an article from just a few months back where a marketing company discusses ways to try and promote their products through email and how video will soon be the next big thing in email marketing.

Their amazing solution was animated gifs.

It's been that way for at least a year under 'Labs'. If anyone bothered to go into the settings they'd have seen it. It's not new.

I was just going to post that.

I'm surprised I haven't received these emails yet.

Although, Gmail's Spam filter is excellent.

I also have an O2.ie email and it gets 40 Spam emails daily, their Spam filter sucks dick.

Yes but it is an enhanced, girthy dick due to the same spam. ;)

    I've covered that.

It was useless under Labs anyway, was preview only.

    http://www.aweber.com/blog/email-marketing/video-email-closer.htm

Then in Nov it became embeddable but you had no way of knowing if the other account holder had their settings switched on.

Now everyone's is on and it's FULLY embedded.

Gmail has had the capability since jan 09

I have checked my own mail history and found a mail where i was discussing the embedded youube on march 27th 2009 (see attachment)

Edit: meant Gmail, not google chat

Google Chat, as distinct from Google Talk, has had it for yonks, so I don't see how this is a new feature.

Yes, that is where the testing of the feature first started.

It is new to be able to automatically embed YouTube videos in emails.

Does it work in emails to non-gmail accounts?

Nope, just a Gmail feature for now it would seem.

I'd say it's only a matter of time though.

Although, as Gmail and YouTube are tied now, maybe they can prevent it from happening?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,659 ✭✭✭CrazyRabbit

I'll only be impressed if they allow me to read my email in Youtube.

What if a non-gmail account sends a youtube link, does the link automatically appear accessible directly in the gmail account...or is it purely gmail to gmail?

No, that's fine, Gmail will spot the URL and display the video.

You can have loads of them and switch from one to the other no bother.

The emails coming from thread reply notifications Boards.ie are showing any YouTube videos they contain in your Gmail.

Unlikely. The Stream still transfers from Youtube.com servers.

    Yes.

I wanna watch videos in my emails.

I like been able to send videos in my emails.

I just made a montage video from photos of my nephew and sent it to elderly relatives. Now they can just watch this in their email without fecking off to YouTube that's covered in more and more ads and confuses them.

Anyway, maybe you think Boards should switch of the YouTube tags?

I mean, is it so hard to click on a link?

No, it's not, and we survived without video embedding tags for what, 10 years? before they were introduced.

On that logic we should just halt all progress so.

    We survived with Windows 7.

Heck, we even survived without the internet.

Let's just bin our PCs and go outside and eat fruit pastels without chewing them.
