What exactly was up with Daniels in the early days when he was in the south western district. They always allude to it but it is never said what he actually did

As far as I remember I don't think he actually did anything wrong over and above the usual bits and pieces necessary. Remember when they had the book of rules and were saying if you want to get a cop fired you can find something?

He definitely did something illegal. There was few hints thrown in that it might have involved keeping money taken in a drug bust as McNulty's FBI pal told him that Daniels was dirty early on in Season One.
Also Daniels pretty much tells Carver something similar when he's giving him the pep talk (again in season one I think) that if he continues down the path he's going then he's going to find it hard to live with himself.

Daniels clearly pulled himself back on the straight and narrow at some point.
Of course it's all in the folder Burrell had. Perhaps they might include that as an extra when they release the definitive "The Wire" DVD/Blu-Ray :pac:.

Was just wondering that myself, was re-watching series 1 and FBI Agent Fitzhew (Fitzhugh??) says with conviction that Daniels is dirty and has six figure sums in his account that have no reasonable source, as mentioned above I think drugs were hinted at.

It just adds to the intrigue of his character in my opinion

He certainly seemed to live an opulent live-style.
I was wondering was his wife wealthy? Maybe that's where the 6 figure sums came from?

Surely the FBI would have thought of that. I know that American institutions come in for a bit of a hammering in the show, but that seems to be incompetence on the 'Prezbo with a gun' scale.

Depends on what they were trying to do tbh.
