Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Sold my car recently.
    Now I am looking to buy a 1.4 focus/golf/corolla.
    Around 2005-2007.
Just curious which has the best performance and economy?
I know the Corolla is quickest. The Focus is the best drive and biggest. I havn't yet driven a golf do.

Best performance is the Corolla by a good bit. the Golf has a nice dash. the Focus handles nicely but the 1.4 engine kills it.

    Focus 0-60 in 14
    80hp, 90 ft/lbs
    Max speed 102 mph
    Fuel Consumption (Urban) 32.5 mpg
    Fuel Consumption (Extra-Urban) 52.3 mpg
    Fuel Consumption (Combined) 42.8 mpg

    Corolla 0-60 in 12
    97bhp, 96 ft/lbs
    Max speed 115mph
    Fuel Consumption (Urban) 33.6 mpg
    Fuel Consumption (Extra-Urban) 49.6 mpg
    Fuel Consumption (Combined) 42.2 mpg

    Golf 0-60 in 14.7
    75bhp, 93 ft/lbs
    Max speed 102mph
    Fuel Consumption (Urban) 29.4 mpg
    Fuel Consumption (Extra-Urban) 50.4 mpg
    Fuel Consumption (Combined) 40.4 mpg

Thanks very much thats alot of help. Do you know if they have timing belts or chains? And what are the service intervals for each of them?

Do yourself a favour and get a 1.6 in the Focus or Golf for a start.

Nice Ghia Focus with the 115 brake engine would be my pick. Will probably work out cheaper to run than a 1.4 too even including tax and insurance as you won't have to dog it constantly.

The Corolla has a chain and Toyota Ireland recommend 15,000km intervals, although the UK service schedule is different.

AFAIK the Golf and Focus are belt but I don't know about the servicing on them.

Agree with EPM on the 1.6 bit, a must on the Focus or Golf.

Wow - surprised at the 97 bhp on the Corolla - never would have thought that.

Another +1 to the 1.6 option for the other two. The Golf in particular is a bit painful.

A 1.2 Micra is quicker than both the 1.4 Golf and Focus - really.

    Should put things in perspective!

TO be fair, Toyota aren't the worst for decent performing engines, the 1.0 in the Yaris has 68hp (7 less than the one in 1.4 Golf mentioned) and the new Avensis 1.6 is 128hp. I know it's nowhere near the 100hp/litre that the Japs were doing in the 90s but they have low emissions and don't have to use turbos or superchargers.

1.0 Yaris also quicker. which is a bit pathetic

The 1.4 engines in the Golf and Focus really are ridiculously underpowered alright, and therefore quite thirsty in both because they've to be flogged to get anywhere! If confined to the 1.4, i'd go for the Corolla but if the 1.6 could be got, i'd go for one of the other two
