OK so apparently I need to embrace the 21st century according to Kold.

    He's probably right.

I have a birthday coming up so what should I get? 5 only please.

My tastes: predominantly guitar related but dislike what I would call wimpy glossy stuff e.g. Coldplay, Snow Patrol etc. Doesn't mean I don't like mellow music though. Also dislike R&B, soul and rap - usually, but not always.

I probably have prog kind of covered.

Other than that, what I do like from this century: Muse, Arcade Fire, some Killers, some QOTSA, some Gomez, some system of a Down and ... er... Jack L?

    Help!

I'll echo the sentiments of Mars Volta, Flaming Lips, Fleet Foxes and Sigur Rós (I think by what you've said you'd prefer Takk more but all their albums are great)

    I'll add my two cents.

Oceansize - Effloresce : If you like your rock and like it loud and sprawling, you'll enjoy these guys.

Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca : If you enjoy Arcade Fire, I'm sure you will these guys.

Midlake - The Trials Of Van Occupanther

At The Drive-In - Relationship Of Command

The Cast Of Cheers - The Cast Of Cheers : Really good new Irish band. Best of all you can legally download their debut album for free here. http://thecastofcheers.bandcamp.com/

Consider that an early birthday present.

    Sufjan Stevens - Illinoise
Modest Mouse - The Moon and Antartica
The Go! Team - Thunder Lightning Strike
The New Pornographers - Twin Cinema
    Saltillo - Ganglion

Also, Nujabes - Metaphorical Music (You won't dislike this hip-hop)

    V. good. I did think twice about that recommendation but it's a grower. The live shows for it were superb - with FNM's Dean Menta in the band!

    Thanks all!

Some of these I have (e.g. Radiohead, Mars Volta, Flaming Lips, Midlake) but of the others, yeah I'm thinking Sigur Ros definitely - like what I've heard. A lot of Wilco about...hmmm.

Some investigation required for some others.

I thought it was a bit too weird to include myself, 'cos it is a grower, as you say. It could put newcomers off Sparks, and that'd be a tragedy. :)

Good point. It is one of my fave albums of recent years, hence the inclusion :)

Love Sparks! Well, vintage Sparks - had more or less disregarded their recent stuff but maybe I shouldn't have.

Another vote for Fleet Foxes then too.

What about Tool? I'm a bit worried about them. On paper I should like them. Often described as "the metal radiohead". Love Radiohead, like a bit of metal and proggy stuff - what can go wrong? Heard some of their stuff and didn't think it was anything special at all.

Maybe I've heard all the wrong stuff. Maybe they are a 'used to be good' band...? ?

    Wilco...but which one?

Just compromise and get Kicking Television, the live album. :D

I'd have ghost slightly above yankee too but i would never have gotten into wilco if it wasn't for yankee so...

I'll concur with the live album being worth it, but i'd still say get yankee first though...

I'd say if you're going for Tool just get any of their albums and give it a full listen. They're hard to dip in and out of if you're not familiar with their stuff. Aenema, Lateralus or 10,000 Days would be worth a punt.

Also any of The National's albums - Boxer or Alligator to start with i suppose.

Adebisi shank - this is an album by a band called adebisi shank (one o the best Irish bands around).

    Sufjan Stevens - Illinoise.

Biffy Clyro - the vertigo of bliss (all the instruments were recorded in one day but if you listen to the album you wouldn't know it).

    Bon Ivor - for Emma.

    LCD Soundsystem - Self titled.

I'd highly endorse all of these albums too. Haven't listened to The Vertigo Of Bliss in years, absolute smasher of an album.

I'd also recommend Bat For Lashes - very beautiful, haunting sound.
