Advice Please. Lifting decking and planting lawn

    Hi all,

    We have a very small back garden. There is a concrete footpath around raised decking. There is a tree growing up through a hole cut in the decking. Because we have small children we want to remove the decking (because it is raised it is dangerous dure to risk of falling etc.). The decking was there when we bought the house so we don't know what is under it. We have tried to have a look and there seems to be concrete slabs piled on top of one another and a plastic sheet underneath.

    Basically, we don't want to tear up decking to find that underneath is not suitable for grass. How can we find out whether it will be possible to have a small lawn? Surely, if the tree is there it is not just concrete underneath? Is it very expensive to have a lawn put in?

    Any advice is welcome as we are anxious to sort this out.

    You will not know until you remove some boards and test the ground. Probably a soil base and at best the ground has become very hard and dried out. Simply dig and add soil conditioner etc and it will be as good as new. It may most likely contain plenty of rubble. This will obviously have to be removed.

    After digging the area, rake to a finish level adding some lawn fertilsier before seeding area/ or as it is a small area, simply use roll-out turf which provides a finished lawn ready to use within 2-4 weeks.
