Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

How would people feel about Metallica in Slane? I think it would be rather enjoyable myself. Reckon it'd sell out, no pun intended. Fook it sure if they can do glastonbury why not. How would one go about suggesting this to the people who can make this happen?

They'd need to make sure they had a very strong support to sell 80k tickets. None of their gigs over the past 10 years or so in the RDS or Marley Park ever sold out and the capacity at those venues is only around 30-40k I'd say.

I've no idea why they play Marley. It's not a good venue. They should play in the 3 arena instead. At least the sound would be better!

Always wondered that myself, marley is no good for a Metallica gig.

IMO Marley is not a good venue for any gig.

Ya Jack pretty much summed it up last few times; not sure bout the Marley park gigs but in the RDS the multiple times they were there they had relatively big supports and drew around 25-30k. The fact they played a festival not in Ireland that tickets sell out before acts are announced isn't a great basis to say they'd be a success at Slane, even still place is a kip would avoid.

I don't think Henry would go for that. There's been similar calls to have AC/DC appear there, but they had the kibosh put on them. As stated previously, it's unlikely that the band would have the necessary drawing power either.

Hasn't he said he wouldn't have a metal band there because of the 'bad crowd'?

Jesus!, what era is that eijit stuck in?? He should see the shíte that goes on at a Rihanna gig. It's practically full on porn on stage and in the feckin crowd, riding in the jacks, off their tits aswell.

Bit of a generalisation, but you get the picture. It's like saying the entire crowd of 30,000+metal fans will be moshing and punching the heads off each other.

I can vouch, a Rihanna show is literally just porn on stage, hell if i didn't know any better she's more image over actually singing her songs, she's terrible imo live.

I only know this, because i was dragged along to one of her Dublin dates a few years back, easily the worst hour & a half of my life.

I can't find the article now and it was a few years ago but I'm reasonably sure I'm not just making it up :pac:

Didn't want to admit the same myself, yeah it's porn alright.

He had guns n roses back in the day when they were considered the 'bad boys' of rock.

I suppose in a lot of older, more staid folks' minds, metal fans must still be like some denim (and leather!) clad bunch of glue sniffing, cheap cider drinking, satan worshiping degenerates who terrorize their parents, neighbours and the few friends they have with their unkempt facial hair and love of demonstrating the diabolical backwards masked messages on any LP they can get their hands on.

Anyone get Scott Ian's book? found this interesting
But the story was they had made a plan that they were gonna make a change and get a new drummer. We were all kind of blown away by that, because it was the four of them. It was like, 'Wow! Really?' And they were, like, 'Yeah. When we finish this tour, we're gonna find a new drummer.'

Imagine how different Metallica would've been had Lars been booted out

^^^ Interesting. Think I remember Dave Mustaine said something about Lars almost being kicked out, but he ended up getting kicked out instead.

  • Registered Users Posts: 141 ✭✭montec

I think they wanted to get rid of Lars after the Master of Puppets tour. Hetfield and Burton were the main drivers and this story was corroborated by Malcolm Dome and the Zazula's. Lombardo was mooted as a replacement as he had left Slayer around this time for financial reasons. I've read that Burtons death might actually have saved Ulrichs job, in the long run.

Read that myself and was about to post it here, very interesting, I heard Mustaine made a similar statement too but I always thought it was bull**** no matter who's mouth it came from, because at the end of it Ulrich formed the band, like him or not he's the one who got the ball rolling. He's not the greatest drummer, he can be good when he wants to be, but at the end of it I think he's the right drummer for Metallica.

Scott Ian said they were in London when he was told this by Burton, James and Kirk during the Damage Inc Tour in 1986. Metallica were only in London around September 21st, I think. The had a gig in Hammersmith, one week later Cliff dies in the bus accident.

    Mad isn't it?

was watchin cunning stunts not long ago and theres a bit in sad but true where lars just completely misses a beat. had a good laugh at that and how regular a thing it is.

watching te videos of him trying to do the drums for the rock band games was 10/10

Haven't seen Cunning Stunts in yonks to be honest, more into the older Binge & Purge DVD's

Don't you mean the Guitar Hero game they did? I did see that video of him trying to do "The Shortest Straw" for the game, not that I want to back Ulrich up in anyway on how he plays his own songs but at that point they hardly ever played "The Shortest Straw" at shows so he may have become sloppy in playing it, reason why he f**ked it up so much and took so long to get right. Making a setlist for a gig if you're a band like them would be hard enough because you'd want to please everybody I'd imagine. Ulrich is normally left with that responsibility and they do change it up every so often. I'd say the "By Request" tour was a challenge for them this year because people were picking a few songs that'd they'd have never played on the night, whiskey in the jar was actually quite popular in other countries in fact other than Ireland which was great to see.

I've seen plenty of recent tour videos and Ulrich is always the one making the setlist, I don't think Hetfield cares much about it as long as it has the fan favourites and Fuel in the mix.

Guitar Hero, that's the one. Yeah, I suppose you're right. I know myself how it is when you haven't played a certain song in a good while... He seems to make notable mistakes but having said that, he's a great drummer.

I thought Ian backtracked on that story a while ago, saying that shifting Lars would have been impossible given that he has ownership of the 'Metallica' name? EDIT: Just read an article about it. Seems they were even prepared to lose the name just so long as they were shot of him. Ouch!

He is a poor drummer for sure, but more importantly he has always been the brains and the tastemaker in the band. Every stylistic change (for better or worse) that Metallica have been through has been spurred on by Lars' ambition.

Neither 'Justice....' or the 'Black Album' could have been realised without him. James maybe the talent - but it's Lars who made them all rich.

The 'By Request' thing was no more challenging than getting out of bed in the morning (Stephen Hawking excluded) , when voting opened it was only to Fan Club members because they had presale, then the General Sale people came in and voted, the result was more or less the exact same set list the band have been playing for the last 10yrs or so, give or take 1 or 2 changes

My favourite line in the classic album episode was Lars to Kirk ....referring to where he'd be living if he hadn't added his tuppence worth to sandman

Would it be possible we'd see an Arch Enemy type situation with Metallica, Lars stepping down to work behind the scenes while they brought in a new drummer, or is it too late in the game for them.

Angela Gossow wasn't a founding member and wasn't even an original member so couldn't really draw comparisons there. No chance of Lars leaving his own band.

If Lars does own the Metallica name then maybe he could lease it out once he retires. Every territory could have its very own officially-sanctioned 'Metallica' tribute band. A franchise, if you will, like McDonalds.:p
