Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I'm still trying to get my head around how big they became after the video for One was released. When you consider the population size of mainland UK, the troubles in NI and the republic being an economic back water in 1988, they played three Irish dates on that tour. After the Tuesday gig I remember looking in to the Purty Kitchen (pub around the corner) seeing James Hetfield drinking a pint (I was 14, too young to get in).

Tickets for the 2 Irish shows on the Damaged Justice tour were £9.50 + booking fee, so probably £9.55, god damn that's a steal compared to ticket prices nowadays.

That was prob big money back then, might be what €50 is now

£9.50 back then would probably be €11 or something in today's money.

Definitely, and if someone did both show, just a bit over £20, again compared to today's extortionate prices, that was cheap..

You can get wristbands at gigs merch stands for €10 :pac:

    21.38 apparently.

    21.38 apparently.

The good old days when bands made their money because we bought their music.

I was at the second Dublin date of this tour, one of my first gigs. Fairly ferocious stuff in fairness and very raw, especially when compared to the Seattle 89 stuff, which was later on in the same tour. The One video definitely exposed them to a more mainstream audience while the band still maintained their "underground" status. That said, they had massive momentum behind them; 4 great albums, really slick management and the rock/metal press absolutely fawning at them, not to mention their very successful stint on the US Monsters of Rock tour, where they all but destroyed everyone else on the bill. The planets were lining up up very nicely for them at this time.

And then it went horribly, horribly wrong for all - except the band of course!

could be bull**** but a guy on the Metclub fourms has siad someone he knws who is high up in the music business in Ireland told him that Metallica will headline Slane Castle in 2017. (the guy also mentioned that this person told him that ACDC would be touring in 2015 a month before ROB was announced)

I could only see Metallica in Slane with a top class support bill or if the capacity got reduced.

Aviva Stadium or the RDS please but who says they will actually play here on the next tour ???
The same kind of stuff was bandied out after St Anger and DM. Can't see it barring some kind of GnR co headline thing or something similar. Aviva maybe, but with a decent support like a Big 4.... now that would be awesome!

Id be happy if both GNR and Metallica stayed the hell away from slane and played Stadiums here

    GNR- Aviva
    Metallica- RDS or Aviva

Croke park can go to Bon Jovi or the Rolling Stones

cant wait for 2017 if a lot of bands hit ireland :D:D

Is my memory a bit warped but wasn't it nearly wider than it was long? It had an old school hall feel about it too.

Yeah it was, it was a right ****ing kip but there was some mental nights in there

  • Registered Users Posts: 141 ✭✭montec

A bit like an old parochial hall, U2 shot some of the Pride (I think) video in there.
Also, there was a guy who had a Flickr account and he had photographed countless bands in there (loads of great metal bands including Metallica and Anthrax on the '86 tour) but it seems to have disappeared now.

Wonder if something else from the new album will be played, heard about this "Moth into Flame" song, could well be that one.

Just listening to a few metallica albums today and thought to myself that everyone always talks about how metallica changed after AJFA. But to be honest, they changed on every album.

Kill em all - sounds nothing like anything else.
    RTL- sounds nothing like KEA.
MOP- sounds nothing like KEA or RTL.
AJFA- sounds nothing like the above.
    Black album-sounds nothing like above.
Load/reload- sounds like black but isn't.
St anger- doesn't resemble anything above.
DM- sounds nothing like anything above.

The point is, Metallica changed with every album. Their stage sound never changed, they still have the fire live.

And still he's very emotional about Cliff, fair play to him.

Sure they lived in each others pockets right till the end with Cliff, lived in the same house, had to share hotel rooms and even beds on tour because the money wasn't rolling in then, shame Cliff never really got to see them get their first gold record which they got 2 months after the bus accident, probably didn't get to see much of the cash either, at least he got to enjoy the tours.
