Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Tried it, still couldn't do it. Oddly, it becomes easier to pronounce it if you cover your mouth with your hand while saying it

Don't worry, you'll be sorted when Katla erupts.

Just a question. Would you risk going on a plane tomorrow? Do you think it's too soon? I would be fairly hesitant :p

I'd be the same tbh, but then again if I was stranded somewhere since Thursday I don't think I'd be hesitant to jump on the next flight I could get home

Yeah my feelings as well. I'm getting frustrated at this stage.

Mt Etna erupted ash less than 2 weeks ago yet how come there were no closures over europe then???

Italy is a hell of a lot closer than iceland!

winds...the ash obviously didn't come near Europe...just so happened that winds from Iceland came directly towards Europe.

but remember, according to the Cable Guy, he who hesitates masturbates.

but seriously what if you are still hesistant to fly tomorrow, so you take the road, and end up dying in a car crash:(

Pretty much every day of the year there are SIGMET volcanic ash advisories out for Etna, as there are now for Eyja.....Ejya......Enya, though in most cases not to the same extent. Though it is an issue for traffic at Catania. For example, here's the latest:
    WVIY31 LIIB 191545
LIRR SIGMET 04 VALID 191615/192215 LIMM-
LIRR ROMA FIR FBL VA MT ETNA (LAST OBS 110430Z BY LICZ) EXT 15 NM E
    OF ETNA FL070/100 MOV ESE 25 KT=

Volcanic Ash extending 15 nautical miles east of Etna between 7,000-10,000ft, moving east southeast at 25 knots.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,327 ✭✭✭sunbabe08

seriously the other two volcanos are easy to pronouce. while this current one i cant even start to pronouce it and i've listened to the icelandic guy pronouce it. i think the icelandic people are having a great laugh at us now

Good Idea. Lets just nickname the bugger Enya. Thats easier to pronounce:cool:

This is why webcams are cool. We could totally see the new increase in the ash cloud 2-3 hours ago on the webcams. See my comment from that time. No need to wait for agencies to report to see what's happening!

Tis a pity it seems to be shrouded in cloud/mist right now.

edit - latest VAAC advisory shows the new risk area:

Seems to be making a beeline for Ireland.

There's quite a lot of planes in the airspace of central Europe right now, considering both the time of day and the modelled extent of ash throughout europe...

New ash cloud up to 15k feet... not good.

Yes, Hungarian air space was opened at 12:00 on Monday (GMT+1). However, from 8 Am tomorrow it will be fully closed again, as has been announced. Some lucky few have flown now....

My poor friend has not much chance for a Chicago-Frankfurt flight back home on Wednesday :( poor lad.

Finally the webcam is back up. Hard to tell in the dusk but it doesnt look like there is much of an ash cloud there? I heard that lava at the crater is a good sign because it shows a change that should mean less ash.

Heh... looks like an olympic flame.

I think I have the pronunciation worked out, here is my best phoenetic.

    a e i fhut li ooh guit

Treat it as seven syllables and you'll quickly become an expert.

Heh... looks like an olympic flame.

I'm pretty sure the ash is still there, the activity has been increasing from about 7 PM till darkness, and the ash cloud was again massive.
Best part is the reflection of the flame/lava on the clouds.
I just can't stop watching it, totally mesmerized.... I feel a primal fear in my guts just by watching it.... uhhh.

Wow. Live lava is definitely cooler then Facebook, Myspace, Boards,ie, BMW, Mercedes, jet fighters, Ferrari and the Bugatti Veyron combined. Go Nature!

    Pronunciation: Ey-ya-fyal-la-yo-kool

In other news, Katla tremors have hit a new high (top readout).

"Eyjafjallajökull is through the icecap now and ash production is slowing down. But there are two kinds of eruptions, one with pure lava from the earths core, the second from gas-filled material. When the latter erupts you don't need the water to produce ash and the stroke will go double high - you aint seen nothing yet. Also note that Eyjafjallajökull is the baby volcano to Katla next door neighbor, which under a much bigger icecap last erupted 1917 and is long due now. History tells us that Eyjafjallajökull is likely to trigger Katla, give it a two year or so and we will have a full-sized eruption in 2012"

    i wonder is he/she right.
