The met office have issued a new set of charts for aircraft, these now have two zones, one where there is a risk of meeting ash and another one where the ash is likely to exceed safety levels.

Can I ask a stupid question? Why is there large gaps between some areas where predicted high levels of ash may be encountered?

From this angle you can see the glow of lava starting to become visible, should get more vivid as it gets darker. Hopefully wont get any clouds to spoil the view...

It doesn't really matter to us now that winds have turned. It can do what it likes.

I believe Iceland's airports may close today - for the first time since the eruption!

The longer she stays unstable, the more of a chance it will effect Katla
Then it will matter to us.

The wind has dispersed and diluted it, but much of it has simply fallen to the ground.

Moderate to heavy showers are forecast over much of southern Iceland today. Southeasterly winds at 5,000ft may just blow the majority of the plume to the north of Reykjavik's two airports, but they will still no doubt be affected.

The latest from Iceland Met Office :

23 April 2010 10:45

Volcanic tremor has been similar the last 24 hours. GPS stations around Eyjafjallajökull showed deflation associated with the eruption.

The plume could be seen on IMO's radar till 04:00. This morning it rose up to 16.000 feet, ca 4.8 km, and ash is blowing towards west.

Water in Markarfljot river increased slightly yesterday, probably due to continuous flow from the eruption area (Gigjökull).

Yes, well Katla is a completely different matter. If that erupts, it doesn't matter what way the wind the blows, we'd all know about it soon enough!

I was thinking that but couldn't work out if it was further back in the distance or part of the same volcano. I didn't notice it there earlier anyway.

The flight zone for Keflavik International Airport and Reykjavik International Airport is closed from today Friday 23 April until further notice, due to the recent volcanic eruption in Eyjafjallajökull glacier in Iceland.

The ash distribution is not expected to reach Northern or Eastern Iceland and the two other international airports at Akureyri and Egilsstadir will stay open for all air traffic. Icelandair and Iceland Express intend to operate their flights to/from Iceland from Akureyri Airport.

Passengers are urged to monitor flight schedules closely on their airline web sites since changes can be made with short notice.

Unless it really blows up, there is little chance of disruption to air travel under the new revised guidlines.

Just watching the volcano. Can anyone tell me what that bright thing is thats flying so close? I mean if the ash is so dangerous how come an aircraft is flying right beside it?

Would it not be the rising moon behind clouds? Moonrise for there yesterday was around 10:10pm Irish time, and that moon looks around an hour high in the photos.

With all due respect Su, the moon dosent fly around the sky at night.:)

heres a video of the event, thousands of people saw this aircrft fly around and very close to volcano. Just strange, thaz all

Yeah there have been plenty of flights in and around the crater, the ash is so visible that it's easy to avoid. But I wouldn't fancy it at night like he's doing! :cool:

It looks like some new vents have opened up in the last few days. Check the lower one. It was there 4 days ago!





Also check the huge amount of snow melt on the mountain in only the last 4 days!! It must really be heating up inside! The river you can compare in both photos and it is must bigger and wider now which shows a huge increase in melt water!
