I was actually thinking about this today, it had been so cold over the weekend with a north wind.

Its just Ireland thats been affected, over flys are okay

At time of posting there are no planes north of Dublin for the British Isles
This is a pretty cool website. It shows a diagram of the ash cloud, which seems to be over Scotland and Northern Europe. At the moment most of the flights seem to be heading towards mid/southern Europe.

The quickest way to check your flights is to check the airport websites on www.daa.ie

Ryanair have cancelled all flights from 6am to 2pm TUESDAY..

Would anyone be able to hazard a guess as to what will happen after that?

Is there a good chance flights will resume after 2pm?

Defo traces of volcanic ash/dust over Galway (if not the whole country) this morning in the skies; first time I have seen any trace of evidence of this since the whole saga started a few weeks back. Tried to capture it on camara this morning but pics do not capture the essence of the sky this morning before the main bank of cloud moved over:

    DSC02463.jpg

A sky I would normally associate with a more continental type set up from the east, but the air stream is coming from the direct NW. Was a nice site I have to say. :)

Irish airspace to re-open at 1pm.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,134 ✭✭✭✭maquiladora

Haven't seen a swarm of earthquakes like this since around mid April. Not sure what it indicates about the nature of the eruption though....

    http://en.vedur.is/earthquakes-and-volcanism/earthquakes/myrdalsjokull/

The also update from the Icelandic Met mentions :
Largest eruption plumes were observed at 5-5,5 km height (17-18,000 ft) estimated from the Icelandic Coast Guard (ICG) flight at 14:30. The plume rises higher after large explosions. It is heading east-south-east to south-east from the eruption site.

Scientists working at Gígjökull regularly hear explosions and booming sounds and feel the ground vibrate....

Yep, will be opening at 1pm. But the IAA is saying Irish airspace is still at risk for the rest of the week so there may be further restrictions, but fingers crossed there won't be.

Did you know saga is an Icelandic word for 'story'?

    Nice picture.

Brother and his wife and son are supposed to be flying back to London today...my nephew's first year college exams are starting next week, and he's having a few panic attacks, the poor thing!

Colleges are being understanding as regards the ash - I know my own college asked lecturers to extend deadlines and rearrange exams if needed for those caught by the cloud

Latest information from the Icelandic Meteorological Office has confirmed an increase in activity from the Iceland volcano Eyjafjallajökull.

As the Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre for this area, the Met Office is continuing to provide timely information to NATS and CAA about the dispersion of the volcanic ash. This is in line with the new engine criteria set by the CAA and the aviation industry.

Current ash advisories bring the ash plume towards the north west of the UK.

Any decisions on airspace closures are the decision of the CAA and NATS and further information on the impacts of this increased activity should be sought from them.

The latest chart shows a big drop off in activity, hopefully that means a pause in the eruption is coming soon.

Yeah, looks like a lot more ash this morning, more than I have seen for the for the last 2 weeks anyway.

The intensity of the tremors isn't a direct relation to the ash production. I think the tremors indicate magma movement. If you look back the 15th for example the tremors were at a lot lower scale yet the ash plume was massive then.

But yeah, I hope she does start to calm down soon!

Possible further disrupted Wed-Thur and at the weekend....
13.33 Dave Murphy, Head of the Aviation Services Division at Met Éireann, has said there is a possibility that flights will be disrupted tomorrow and on Thursday, as northeasterly winds are expected to continue to blow ash in Ireland's direction.

Mr Murphy said he was fairly confident the situation would improve on Thursday afternoon, but added that there was still a risk of some disruption over the weekend.

Im due to fly to London Wednesday morning, and back to Dublin on Thursday evening.

Because of the risk of flight cancellation, I had to cancel my hotel booking in London in case I would be charged for not turning up.

Now, if flights are on tomorrow, I'll have to find accommodation "on the spot" in London, and hope that flights will not be disrupted on Thursday.

The whole situation is a pain in the butt.

Half hidden in the patchy cloud but you can see the plume in the background on this view. Thats the highest I've seen the plume since the most active phase of the eruption :

    http://eldgos.mila.is/eyjafjallajokull-fra-thorolfsfelli/

I'll try and take a screencap if the clouds clear a bit better.

possibly a stupid question, but i'll ask it anyway, given this has been going on for a few weeks now is it likely enough ash has made it's way into the stratosphere to effect the climate. or will it take Katla erupting for that to happen?

You're entitled to your opinion. I think airports probrably will be shut from tomorrow afternoon possibly sooner. We shall see. It won't last long though - Easterly winds setting in later Thursday should clear the risk.

Is this right that it may be cleared by easterly winds on Thursday......

The jetstream winds though are from Iceland throughout
Isn't it the winds higher up that matter.
If you look at the jetstream for the next week or so it shows a direct feed from Iceland
