A few more earthquakes at Eyjafjallajökull within the last hour, and one close to the Katla caldera too.

Cork and Kerry are only airports currently open, and are closing later this evening
    • Dublin Airport expected to re-open at 4am tomorrow
    • Waterford, Knock and Donegal to re-open at 6am tomorrow
    • Galway airport will begin operations at 9am tomorrow
    • Shannon Airport to be restricted from 5.30pm tonight until 1pm
    • Cork Airport to close at midnight , re-open at 11am
    • Kerry Airport remains open until at least midnight, will reopen at 3pm
    • IAA to confirm lifting restrictions for tomorrow at 8.30pm

You have to laugh at the fact that Waterford can open at 6am and Cork at 11am. In the air they are about 10mins apart!

it seems fairly clear from the article that barring an eruption of Katla there won't be any significant effect on the climate.
Thats because I didnt actually read it all, just did a clark kent job on it.
    :D:DThanks for narrowing it down

Well its interesting that the quake there happened at virtually the exact same time as another two quakes at Eyjafjallajökull but I wouldn't be too worried about Katla yet, it was just one fairly weak quake, not like the swarm at Eyjafjallajökull.

Yeah the tremors have dropped right off on those graphs. It's the earthquakes that have increased. 29 in the last 3 days, before that there were hardly any in that area. The Icelandic Met Office think it means there is new magma rising up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,134 ✭✭✭✭maquiladora

A bit of good news. The latest Met Office charts show the ash moving down south, looks like Ireland will be clear tomorrow afternoon for a while at least.

The quake near Katla has been removed from the map now so it may have just been an error.

    05 May 2010 - Volcanic Ash Advisory - Updated
Volcanic Ash update issued at 1900 hours on Wednesday May 5th Information from the Icelandic Meteorological Office concerning the Eyjafjallajökull Volcano today (Wednesday) is that there is increased earthquake activity beneath the volcano since Monday May 3rd. These earthquakes were at first very deep in the ground (about 23km) but then migrated upward. This indicated that “new” magma (molten lava etc) is rising from deep below the surface. It is anticipated that the eruption will continue

Yep, over on Science Blogs, a guy from Iceland that has his own site about earthquakes/volcanoes had this comment :

This means that the new magma is coming from a great depth and is pushing up fast and with great pressure. This is going to mean a lot of problems when it reaches the surface, that would the top crater in Eyjafjallajökull.

    Update on activity
    Eruption in Eyjafjallajökull, Iceland

    Assessment - 05 May 2010 20:50

Increased seismicity suggests that new material is intruding from deep below Eyjafjallajökull and latest GPS-observations suggest inflation...

    Oh great...

Yes, it means the ash plume is reaching between 9 and 10 kms into the atmosphere which I think is as high as it ever got in April, if not worse.

Confirms the plume reached 32,000 feet at least for a time yesterday. Some ash forecast between FL200/350 in the Atlantic.

There's some concern at the moment on ScienceBlogs at the amount of sulfur dioxide (SO2) that has suddenly been released in the last 36 hours from the Volcano.

    http://satepsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/pub/OMI/OMISO2/iceland.html

I'm not an expert on this at all, but some of the comments from people there who seem to know more about this are :

The altitude is generally about the jet max-35,000. But the word YIKES comes to mind because that indicates this thing is really chugging from the belly of the beast. SO2 is dangerous as hell to the environment and it will cut the ozone and clouds like a knife, turn the salt water fresh in ref to the THC and that aint good

But, that SO2 in that concentration is big time bad ju-ju. Strongest concentration I have EVER seen and it has little dispersion.

higher SO2 and more explosive magma...this is not a very good sign is it? Could it be that a big mafic recharge is mixing the magma?

Jaw-drop. Wow!! that must have all been in the last 36 hours or so since the last time I checked. Looks like the eruption has REALLY ramped up.

Any climate changes possible? A pretty big SO2 column suddenly appeared for today...

Vigorous SO2 emissions into the stratosphere... Laki, anyone?

The bloody clouds are totally blocking the view of the ash plume. Very frustrating.

Cloud is totally blocking the view, thats why you cannot see the plume. A few people got a brief glimpse of it earlier this morning and said the plume looked as high as it has ever been since the start of the eruption.

Clouds starting to clear a little now. Look in the top left, plume looks very dark and high.

Edit. Clouded over again now. Took a screenshot, you can see the plume behind the cloud there, looks like its pushing right up with the top maybe even beyond the view of the camera.

9 earthquakes recorded already today. 33 in total since Tuesday evening. There's a lot of stuff happening under the surface for the past couple of days.

Latest ash forecast. Plume max height of 30,000 ft. Ireland & UK in the clear but could be a chance of transatlantic disruption there by the look of it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,134 ✭✭✭✭maquiladora

Well it depends. Not every eruption is going to be huge, Katla could erupt and it could turn out to be a smaller eruption than whats going on at the moment.

Anyway, shame about the clouds spoiling the view at the moment, but at least you can see from this sat view the height and size of the ash cloud now.

The latest from lcelandic news media .....
The volcano in Eyjafjallajökull glacier appears to be spewing as much ash as it did at the beginning of the eruption; a great plume of ash extended from the crater yesterday and last night. The phreatic eruption continues at significant force and explosive activity is increasing. The Civil Protection Department will discuss the situation today.

yeah that's true it only has the potential to be far greater. If you were to believe the programmes on National Geographic we're all doomed if Katla erupts.

Planet Earth survived the 1918 eruption anyway. :pac: You are right though, it does have the potential to be pretty big. But who knows that surprises Eyjafjallajökull may yet have in store itself? ;)

Not an expert at all I'm afraid! Just reading stuff and learning from other people that know more about this. It's interesting stuff though.

Waiting for the next update from the Iceland Met. It will appear on this page at some stage today, it should be interesting....
