Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Two new live streams going up here :

    http://eldgos.mila.is/eyjafjallajokull-fra-fimmvorduhalsi/

Top one should feature smooth video, not like the jerky low frame rate streams we have had up to now. The lower one I think will be infra-red, so we should be able to see an eruption in the dark and through clouds. They are just getting set up now.

most reliable source of predictions is the VAAC website's updates at the following link: Ashcloud monitor

The most recent image is at the bottom, a new image is put up every 6 hours showing the movement of the cloud at the time of the update, and the predicted movement in 6, 12 and 18 hours time.

Currently they update every 6 hours or so but in times of higher activity they'll update more often

Hey! Who was that, did anyone else see him on the first cam?

Excellent quality, apart from the fog...

Ah, I should have read the "infra-red" part of your post before thinking JESUS CHRIST ITS ERUPTING.

    Iceland Met Office update :
    Assessment - 06 May 2010 20:15

Explosive activity has increased and effusive part has decreased for the last two days. This results in a higher eruption column with increased tephra fallout.

The ash plume, observed from commercial pilots between 0530h and 0800h: 30,000 ft/9km. ICG helicopter flight between 13h and 14h: sometimes under 20,000 ft (where there is a cloud bank) and oscillates up into the cloud bank (over 9 km).

The plume has been almost totally hidden by cloud today, this was a rare glimpse from this morning :

It said a huge cloud of ash heading towards us , 1000 miles long and 700 miles wide.
It said the volcano is entering its most explosive stage and it is bad news for the summer..

I dunno about it heading towards us just yet, its going to be off the West coast up till midday tomorrow anyway, we will see what happens after that, hopefully it will stay out over the Atlantic : http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/aviation/vaac/data/VAG_1273168968.png

The upside down question mark :pac: moving down by the west of Ireland is the ash cloud.

Iceland Met Office has confirmed that the volcano is bluging or inflating again over the last 48 hours. This indicates we could see a new phase to the eruption in the near future, maybe with a new opening.

Latest charts show the ash staying out to the west of Ireland for the rest of today at least.

4 new earthquakes around Eyjafjallajökull this morning.

Got this screen shot before the clouds moved in after 8am this morning:

Thats hopeful right? Once we get magma most of the ash should die down I assume.

Explain this one to me. And i know Im leaving myself open to ridicule.

I was driving home from work yesterday evening (Galway), I heard and felt this tingling noise outside the car on the roof. I looked but there were no lorrys pulling a load of sand, which i assumed was the reason. Then I saw the windscreen start to fill up with pink red droplets, with the same tinkling noise. This lasted for only 2 or 3 seconds and was gone again.
I had to use the screen wash to remove the doplets from the windscreen, but when i got home there was plenty of evidence left on the roof and bonet. Everyone that looked at it thought it was very odd, some suggested it was red ash !
I find that explanation hard to believe. But i def didnt fly into a swarm of flies or anything like that, so its hard to know if it is indeed ash from volcano.
But it did fall from above, and its red.
You have to scrap it off the car this morning with a fingernail, its stuck hard to it and its gritty.

    Mad or what !

Heard on Newstalk that it's looking bad for Sunday afternoon - depending on the strength of the wind from the North. I was going to arrange flights for Monday morning - should I even bother?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,579 ✭✭✭Webmonkey

Oh no, I'm scheduled to fly tomorrow morning at 10.

How long will it take before Ash cloud reaches us this time? - Will I just get home in time?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,134 ✭✭✭✭maquiladora

Look at the latest charts, the ash is staying out to the west of us for the moment anyway :

Next update there is around 12:30.

    News from home.....

The Government Taskforce on Emergency Planning is meeting in Dublin to discuss the affect of the volcanic ash cloud from Iceland.

Agencies including the Irish Airport Authority and Met Eireann have gathered to discuss updates on the current situation with representitives from the Department of Transport.

Was thinking of flying to the US for about 5 days (last minute plan) but need to be back to start a new job Monday 17th of May.

At the moment everything is telling me that there is a fair chance to think that I might not get back in time. Especially if the winds swing around to come from the north more.

Is there any good resource for long term weather forecasts?

Thats the output from the GFS weather model. You can select select charts like Jetstream and North Atlantic winds there. The problem is that after 3/5 days its less and less reliable like all weather models.

  • Registered Users Posts: 93 ✭✭jaredGalen

Thanks, I don't know what to do :( Guess the safer option is of course not to go. Things change so quickly its feckin unreal.

That says Wed 9am has the winds pointing straight at us.

Yeah its hard to know what will happen from one day to the next. Also worth keeping an eye on Met Eireann's updates here too :

I'm in the similar situation, I have a flight tomorrow morning to Vienna and I'm supposed to be back on Monday morning, still not sure what decision to make, I keep watching the websites mentioned in previous posts but this is not helping.

Amazingly the update posted yesterday was based on the 19:00 forecast and they said:
The plume should be held out to the west, just off the Irish west coast, for the next two or three days and the risk of airport closures is low

At 20:30 the IAA released its airport closure notices....Arrgghhhhh
Anyway, I'll let the thread back on topic, no point in moaning about my woes :)

Looking very explosive at the moment.

Has the release of sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere died down? Also, is the plume now reaching as high as it was in the early days of the Eruption?

  • Registered Users Posts: 93 ✭✭jaredGalen

Could somebody interpret this for me?
What is the Blue outline versus the previous green outline?

I'd say from looking at the IAA chart ( see link) that the blue line represents the area where ash exceeds engine manufacturer ash limitations

It doesn't look like there is as much SO2 up there at the moment. Not sure about the exact plume height at the moment, its been up and down a fair bit but it was at 9km at times yesterday and I think thats as high as it's ever been.

  • Registered Users Posts: 93 ✭✭jaredGalen

I think now it refers to the altitude of the ash layer.

Green signified ash around the 20000ft level.

Blue signifies ash higher then that, up around 35000 feet. I think this is getting close to cruising altitude of the planes. Hopefully someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

Edit: I see dak posted another possible explanation. I should post quicker :)
