Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

New swarm of eight earthquakes within the last few mins, most of them very shallow including one at just 0.2 km.

Edit : 10 quakes now, swarm still ongoing.

You can see them on the map as red dots running in a roughly north/south line.

14 quakes now, interesting mix of deep and shallow and very interesting linear pattern.

Edit : 17 now, also it looks like they have been manually checked and depths have been changed, they are almost all very deep.

Interesting linear pattern alright! What's the next volcano north on that line I wonder? Looks like the plates are ripping apart.
Katla seems to be sleeping soundly through all of this so far.

Edit... Rumour has it Hekla can be a bitch when she wakes up.

These type of deep, magma related swarms are usually around 1-2.5

Dublin airport closing at 7pm till 9am at the earliest. But the ash forecast looks good beyond tomorrow : http://transport.nilu.no/browser/fpv?fpp=conccol_VO_1_

Looks like we might not get a decent view of the volcano on the webcams till tomorrow afternoon due to cloud cover.

yeah was trying look but cant see anything. This thing is here for the long term according to bloke on marians show on radio 1 this morning. some vulcanoligist. didnt catch his name as was only waking up

From the IAA.These latest restrictions have been enforced as extensive observations of the drift of the ash cloud, the volcano's activity and the latest weather forecasts indicate an increased quantity of ash over Irish airspace.Just out of interest, did the IAA carry out test flights?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,212 ✭✭✭✭Oscar Bravo

To answer my own question it seems the IAA did carry out 2 test flights today, one to the South East and one to the North West, quite a bit of ash found in filters attached to the plane that went to the North West.

Yeah, just watching this now, interesting to hear about the Kamchatka peninsula volcanos being very active at the moment. Anyone taking bets on the location of the next supervolcano?

Still can't understand why the engine/aircraft manufacturers/civil authorities never carried out any tests previous to this on an engine test bed with simulated ash densities to determine what really is the safe level at which aircraft can fly through an ash cloud. It's just guesswork at the moment.

One interesting tidbit - the correct pronunciation of Eyjafjallajokull is something like this: Aye-ya-fat-la-ya-fud-la.

I reckon it's because of the different chemical makeup/particle size/shape etc. ejected by different volcanoes so they can't reliably test engines until they are actually in the ash cloud of the volcano in question or maybe use a sample of the ash on a test bed.

Eyja's ash is particularly dangerous to aircraft engines because it's basically made up of tiny shards of glass.
