Hello,

Basically, I live in Killiney and I'm sick of very average internet speeds as I'm quite a heavy downloader and 3MB is too slow for me.

the max that eircom/vodafone/magnet will supply me with is 3MB, I believe that I am connected to the Rochestown exchange (not 100% Sure though)

is there any way at ALL to get faster broadband? here are my router stats:
Statistics Downstream Upstream Line Rate 3072 Kbps 384 Kbps Noise Margin 16.1 dB 29.0 dB Line Attenuation 43.0 dB 18.0 dB

if I can't get faster broadband now, is there any plans or can I find out if there is to upgrade the rochestown exchange?

also, UPC will not service the area either but is there a map of there upgrade plans?

if not, is there any alternative options like WIMAX (doesn't look viable as been getting alot of bad reviews, and speeds don't tend to be over 3mb alot of the time)

    cheers,

    Kevin

On ADSL1 you'll get a bit over 6 megs, on ADSL2 you'll get just under 8 megs. But no exchange upgrade will make your line shorter, so that's it.

so even if they upgrade my exchange the maximum speed I can get is 8mb?

what's the story with UPC broadband, does that work off phone lines also?

No, UPC is a cable service using the DOCSIS standard, and has no relation to phone lines.

no it doesn't work off of phone lines, you'll only ever manage to get 8mb on that phone line for the foreseeable future and thats if its on an adsl 2+ exchange

right so basically, my biggest hope is NTL, but they don't currently provide broadband in my area just Television services.

is there any public plans for ntls expansion? down the road a bit I saw a white road barrier and it said something along the lines of "*Contracted company* working on behalf of UPC"

according to there map, http://www.upc.ie/media/2010/1/20/map_dublin.png there starting to upgrade, but by the looks of it there expanding everywhere apart from the killiney hill area although killiney hill is written in blue?

UPC are still in the process of major upgrades, but you'll need to ask them about possible timelines I'm afraid.
