Shopping list (sailing clothes)

I did my RYA Level 1 & 2 dinghy courses last summer and I've been doing some dinghy sailing since then. When I sail I use a wetsuit, windbreaker, and buoyancy aid provided by the club. I wear an old pair of trainers and a woolly hat if necessary. I bought my first pair of sailing gloves today. I don't have a big budget, but I think it's probably time that I got some of my own gear. Partly for comfort and convenience, but moreso because I might want to crew for other people in various clubs during the summer. I might not be able to shop for everything I need at once - so what items should be my priority, and where should I look?

    Thanks!

are you thinking of dinghy racing? If so: wetsuit, bouyancy aid, kag/smock and booties are needed. You can use runners instead of booties but will get cold feet. Get a decent wetsuit if you can afford it so you'll be able to extend the season a bit. Would be nice to have rash vest/thermal layer for under the wetsuit, good sunglasses etc. A tip is to wear cheap rain bottoms over the wetsuit to protect it from rips and it will help keep you warmer.

Yep definitely thinking of racing. So what kind of price range would I be looking at for those 4 items? If I wanted to do a little bit of crewing on a cruiser, what's the minimum gear I could get away with?

Really you can pay anything you want for the gear from €80 upwards for a wetsuit etc. Check out a few online sites for price ideas but you're better off going into a shop to try on the gear as fit is important. www.purplemarine.com isn't a bad shop online for dinghy gear. It also helps to chat to other sailors as they can tell you if the gear they use is good value or not. Don't be afraid to buy unbranded gear either, it's often good at a fraction of the cost.

For crusiers you can use the bouyancy aid and smock with a fleece under it for races and just get some cheap bottoms and boots. If you start going further you can get proper cruising gear at a later stage. I often use this combination during summer races as it's easier to move in.

Thanks. I think the boots should be my first purchase coz I could do with them for the club sailing too. Then I suppose the buoyancy aid would be next coz it would be needed for crewing on any kind of boat. The price of the gear isn't quite as bad as I thought it would be so that's good.
