    Hi,

has anyone else been using an HTC Desire "SIM-free" on O2 bill pay? If so, what steps did you take to have your internet connection settings work?

Under "Mobile network" I'm getting "Connection failed". There's no 3G or H icon displaying.

The phone set up 2 APNs for me for O2 without many settings filled.

I tried updating the settings to the following*manually, but nothing changed:
    Name: o2 MMS
    APN: internet
    Proxy: 62.40.32.40
    Port: 8080
    Username: <not set>
    Password: <not set>
    Server: http://www.o2.ie
    MMSC: http://mmsc.mms.o2.ie:8002
    MMS Proxy 62.40.32.40
    MMS Port: 8080
    MMS Protocol: WAP 2.0
    MCC: 272
    MNC: 02
    APN type: mms

    Name: o2 Internet
    APN: internet
    Proxy: 62.40.32.40
    Port: 8080
    Username: <not set>
    Password: <not set>
    Server: http://www.o2.ie
    MMSC: http://mmsc.mms.o2.ie:8002
    MMS Proxy 62.40.32.40
    MMS Port: 8080
    MMS Protocol: WAP 2.0
    MCC: 272
    MNC: 02
    APN type: <not set>

O2 suggested that I'd change the APN to wap.dol.ie but that didn't do anything.

This same SIM connects to HSPA fine in my old Sony Ericsson.

I have a sim free Desire on O2. No problems at all. connects to H (HSDPA) all the time. Sometimes its E (EDGE) in work but thats in a bad area and my old phone was the same. Do you have a recent sim card? I had the same sim card for 3 years and changed it a while ago. Might be worth getting O2 to send you a new sim because older sims can cause issues like this in new phones.
You are allowed one free SIM replacement per year with O2. Just tell them its dropping out on your handset etc.

edit: by the way, I have the SAME settings your using above. APN is internet.

edit 2: my phone set up the settings as mostly blank too and I had to manually put in the settings above. soundslike your SIM to me.

Cool, thanks for the pointers as at least it tells me I'm going in the right directions.

This SIM is only a week old since I signed up for a new contract with a free Nokia phone. If worst comes to worst, I might ask for a replacement, but in the end I'd be surprised if that's the issue. It does have "3G" stamped on it.

Stating the obvious but why dont you check against the settings in the faq:

Its not the sim, as it works in the other handset. The 3g logo will also be displayed in a 3g coverage area, otherwise you will be using edge for data in non 3g areas. Also you have the option of sending settings directly from the o2 website: link

Davy, thanks for the links. I've tried what I could from both pages, although they don't seem to directly apply to APN settings (rather they're WAP settings, I don't see if the phone even has WAP connection).

I was trying to use the O2 settings link, but couldn't find a model that would closely match HTC Desire in the list.

Apn just means 'access point name', it covers isp, wap etc.

The first link i posted is for the 'isp' settings, which are the ones you want for proper internet connection.

If the desire isn't on the list yet, i would try another HTC model, or ring CC and they might have updated settings they could send.

    Ok, thanks for clarifying.

So reflecting the first link, I tried both open.internet and internet, basically with all other fields set to empty/not set. (MMC and MNC must be set always).

I'll call customer care later for settings.

Spoke to customer care, they didn't have any ideas. She tried sending me settings for the "HTC Advantage" but nothing came through.

Argh! I'm still without data connection.

Any suggesions on last-ditch things to try?

    Fixed :D

I put the SIM into the Nokia that it came with. It connected to HSPA. Browsed the web. Then I put the SIM back in the HTC, and what do ya know, it connected for its 1st time ever.

    Must have needed some activation.
