Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Day Trips by public transport from Dublin ?

    HI

I have some friends coming to visit Ireland from abroad, and would like to bring them on some day trips from Dublin using bus and train.

So I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions on places to visit for day-trip journeys ? Somewhere to go where you can get a bus or train about 10 in the morning, spend a few hours there and be back in Dublin by tea-time.

I know where I can bring them in Dublin itself, but I've no clue whats outside Dublin that would be a nice day trip. Cork and Galway seem too far to do in a day.

Any ideas ? They will be coming in August .

    thanks

    Mike

Dublin based Railtours Ireland may be of interest: http://www.railtoursireland.com/

For a scenic rail trip, a run down to Rosslare can be highly recommended and would leave you with time for a meal there before returning on the afternoon train.

44 bus to Enniskerry, wander by foot up to Powerscourt or browse in village. There used to be another bus service that went direct to Bray so you could come back a different way.

Dart to Killiney for bracing seawalk/swim

Dart to Bray and take in seafront and go up Bray head

Dart to Howth, walk up Howth Head, or down the pier have fish n chips lunch then, check out boat to visit Irelands Eye, take picnic.

Private bus to Glendaloch.... one leaves early morning and returns evening called the St Kevin's bus ( is it still going??)

One of the dublin tour hop on hop off buses are good... I know a Dub that actually does it every few months. The 16 to marley park and a walk a couple of mile up the trail is lovely as well.

The you could take a bus eireann to belfast in the morning and back home in the evening . They run on the half hour at peak.

St.Kevins Bus Service is alive and well see here: http://www.glendaloughbus.com/timetable.html and the 185 bus operates from Bray station to Enniskerry see here: http://www.dublinbus.ie/en/Your-Journey1/Timetables/All-Timetables/185/

Roundwood is also worth a visit with several good pubs and restaurants and is also served by the St.Kevins Bus Service: http://www.glendaloughbus.com/fares.html

The Roundwood Inn was excellent the last time I was there - more than 20 years ago - but according to this recent review still hits the spot: http://www.tribune.ie/article/2009/mar/01/restaurant-review-the-roundwood-inn/

I'd go Laragh/ Glendalough over Roundwood, its just a street with no character and a few pubs.

Agree about the 'main' street in Roundwood but it is just a watering hole on the way to or from the nearby Vartry Reservoir which is a beautiful spot for a ramble. :D

Collins coaches do the Glendalough-Kilkenny day trip which is pretty popular with Dublin tourists lookig for a bit of real Ireland.
