    Hi,

I am trying to refurbish so wooden garden furniture. I went to the DIY shop looking for varnish but was told (without a reason) that it wasn't varnish I needed because it was furniture. I was sold transparent, 'Wood preserver', instead. This is a transparent liquid which you pour from a 1L can and apply with a cloth rather than a paint brush. Well I went ahead and tried it but it doesn't look to have made any difference to the wood. So I went out to Lidl and got a paint tin of 'Beaufix Weatherproof Gel Wood Preserver'. This looks more like what I was expecting, it is stained and you apply it with a paint brush, and says it is suitable for all woods indoor and outdoor. Anyway on reading the can more closely it says that it is suitable for all woods, breathable, good UV protection etc. however in bold it does say not suitable for floors(if they are walked on) or for seating! This is similar to what I was told about varnish in the DIY shop. So I'm wondering why this is? I could only think of two reasons:
    1. It gives off some sort of fumes, so is okay for fencing shed exteriors etc. but not for something you would be in frequent close contact with.
    2. It might get sticky or run in hot weather and so ruin cloths if you sat on it.

So does anyone have any ideas? Why would varnish be recommended not to be used on chairs ?
Looking closer I think explanation 1. above can't be the answer as the can also states 'Suitable for children's toys (DIN EN 71-3)'.

its preservitive, cant use indoors because if it comes into close contact it might stain clothes it shouldnt get sticky but it will rub off on anything that touches it. dont use it indoors. trust me
