Have already paid €30 stamp duty on my bank of ireland visa, and I paid off my balance on my Halifax credit card last month but never got around to closing the account. I now have s statement from Halifax lookin for €30 stamp duty for the next year. Halfiax want me to pay them the €30 before they close the account and then send me out a letter for my other card for next year so I will be exempt from paying the stamp duty for 2010/2011.

    Can this be right:confused::(

Yeah they said as much to me on the phone last week. Its all above board, I brought the same letter to them last year when I left BOI. Take it to your new bank and they'll make sure not to deduct for this year.

Got around to ringing Halifax today to arrange pay the balance and close the account. My last statement had my balance at €30 (to pay for the stmap duty) with payment due date at 6/may. The woman on the phone then stated that the balance was €60, an additional 30 stamp duty fee. I just paid the bloomin thing to close it down but surely this cant be right? Have i gone mad or are Halifax got it mixed up?

I have now paid three lots of stamp duty for two cards, they did say they would send out the letter for my other card for next year.

As far as I know they have to pay it in advance to the Gov and charge us in arrears at the end of the year. As all cards are being closed down on the 19th of June they are charging it now instead of next April. As someone has already said if you keep the proof you have paid it you can present it to your new provider and they will either not charge it or refund you if they have charged for it.

I got a text from them in March saying if i contacted them before 1st April I would save €30 stamp Duty.
So Contacted them, the deal was pay the outstanding €30 stamp duty and clear your balance and close the account before 1st April and you wouldn't get hit with another €30 stamp duty.

Thankfully thats what I done, I had set my account to send me text reminders for when the bill was due. Who says direct marketing cant work in your favour. ;)

I've now switched to a AIB Click joint account with Mrs GPJ and we only pay one €30 stamp duty, or €15 each.

    Happy days.

I also have to pay the €30 stamp duty but haven't closed my account with Halifax yet as I can't pay off my balance.

Moving my credit card (and the money spent) to Ulster bank which is taking bloody long enough been nearly 3 weeks now. Guess alot of people are moving and they have a back log.

So by paying this stamp duty to Halifax I won't have to pay another stamp duty on the Ulster bank one when I get it, is that what you folks are saying?
But I'l need to get proof of this from Halifax??

  • Registered Users Posts: 24,924 ✭✭✭✭BuffyBot

Yes, that's correct. Halifax will give you a letter to pass to Ulster Bank when you close your account with them. This will tell Ulster that you've paid the stamp duty, meaning you won't get double charged for it.

This is driving me crazy. I don't need another card, so is there any way I can avoid paying this outrageous bill to the government? I just paid the bloody stamp duty in April, now I get another 30 euro bill 2 months later - focking kunts.

Same position. I got scammed this way too.
I checked with the regulator - nothing you can do about it. Halifax should have been more up front to their customers, but in the end it's another stealth tax by our thieves in government.

I got through to someone in revenue. The main points she made were that they have not collected the stamp duty yet and that halifax can weave the fee - she suggested having it out with them.

She was also surprised that Halifax did not let the customer know that they would be charged €30 if they didn't close account by April 1st.

So, it seems halifax are pulling a fast one here, according to revenue.

Halifax insisted that I pay the fee before permitting me to close the account.
They were going to leave a 30 euro charge on the account and charge me 10% interest on it with a minimum payment monthly otherwise.

Yes they contacted customers way back in March

See my post number 6 above

They didn't contact me in March.

They didn't contact me in March.

How did you set up your preffered method for contact info?

I had mine set up for Mail & SMS notification

With the SMS notification for Credit card, a reminder text sent to my phone to remind me to pay bill before due date. Was very handy feature. It was also used for new info on my credit card account.

But I also got a letter, so can only account for my circumstances.

    I didn't set up anything.
I received a bill monthly. I got no notification from them in any way, shape or form to inform me to close my account by April to avoid paying duty on a card they were insisting on removing from me.
