the i5 750 is definately the better value and sweet spot at this time. i7 is a bit excessive for the time being, and for a while to come too

For video / photo editing the i5 750 would be better, it is a quad core compared to the i5 670 which is only a dual core.

I don’t know, it will really depend on how much editing you do and how big are the files. I don’t know if you would get a decent i7 setup for 900.
How much ram is in that system, photo and video editing really likes ram. Would you mind posting the rest of the specs for the system.

The dell is the more expensive but it is the better computer. When it comes to video editing (depending on the file size) the extra power of the processer and extra ram would make a difference. If you have the option to I would drop the raid 0.

Thanks flying snail ...What does raid mean..do I just drop it.. or replace it.
    Just one more
there is a choice of Intel Core i5 Processor 750 (2.66GHz, 8MB) or Intel Core i5 Processor 670(3.46GHz, 4MB) for €190 approx extra why is i5 670 more expensive..

    Thanks again

Wont ask anymore stupid questions for a while............

The i5 670 is expensive basically because it is Intel’s top end dual core. I just had a look at the xps 8100 line up on dells website (model DOOX8103). These are the options you seem to have for processers.

    StudioXPS 8100 - Intel Core i5 Processor 650 (3.20GHz, 4MB) add € 0.00
    StudioXPS 8100 - Intel Core i5 Processor 660 (3.33GHz, 4MB) [add € 50.00 or €3/month1]
    StudioXPS 8100 - Intel Core i5 Processor 670 (3.46GHz, 4MB) [add € 190.01 or €10/month1]
    StudioXPS 8100 - Intel Core i5 Processor 750 (2.66GHz, 8MB) [Included in Price]
    StudioXPS 8100 - Intel Core i7 Processor 860 (2.80GHz, 8MB) [add € 100.01 or €6/month1]
    StudioXPS 8100 - Intel Core i7 Processor 870 (2.93GHz, 8MB) [add € 380.01 or €20/month1]

Out of the two included in the price, the i5 650 or i5 750, the 750 would be better, it’s a quad core with more cache compared to a dual core. Out of the two you have suggested the i5 750 is better. A decent quad core will beat a fast dual core at video editing any day. One option you seem to have overlooked is the i7 860 which is pretty much in the middle of the two you suggested price wise but would beat them both when it comes to performance.
in short i5 750 better than i5 670 and i7 860 better than both of those.

Raid 0 basically distributes data across multiple disks in ways that gives improved speed, i.e. half the data on one disk and half on the other. The problem with this is that is doubles your chance of data loss due to drive failure. You don’t seem to have the option here to not use raid.
Please feel free to ask any more questions.

RAID0 is boosted performance and halved redundancy with maximum capacity. RAID1 is boosted performance and double redundancy at the cost of halved effective capacity. The remark about reliability still stands though.
