Anyone else think Ryanair right not to pay board and keep for stranded passengers?

If you look at article 5 related to cancellations though it is specifically worded so that in extraordinary circumstances passangers are not entitled to any additional monitary compensation as defined under article 7, however the duty of care (accomodation, food etc) defined under article 9 applies regardless.

I do think that it is harsh on the airlines, clearly when the regulation it was being drawn up (and the air carriers were involved in the negotiations), nobody envisages a situation whereby European airspace would be closed for such a prolonged period.

That's an excellent detail, I hadn't noticed that I had quoted from the preface.

Airlines should not have to pay for anything other than the cost of the flight. This is what travel insurance is for. If insurance companies are refusing to pay up then how can the airlines be made to.

I hope Ryanair win their class action case if that is what they are up to. I suspect that it is since its not like Michael O'Leary to give away money for nothing.

Anyone know whats the story with compensation for expenses incurred as a result of the flight cancellations. ? Ryanairs website seems to be only offerinhg a refund of the money spent on the flights but the recent extensive media coverage on this issue suggest it is possible to claim for far more than this.

How exactly does one lodge such a claim (particularly is one is resident outside the UK/Ireland) and who/where does one contact ?

A friend of mine was planning fo fly Belfast to Poznan via Liverpool. The Belfast leg of his flight was cancelled and he couldnt wait around so he took a Bus to London a train to Stanstead and a flight to Poznan. Presumably (going by the media reports) he will be entitled to the bus fare, the train fare the difference in the cost of the flights and possibly any other expenses (food etc) incurred en route ?

Sorry to tell you, but because your friend made alternative arrangements he is only entitled to a refund of the cancelled flight.

This is because he did not avail of his right to be rescheduled onto a later flight.
