What sort of sheet material would be best?
Bear in mind i'd like to take the sharp edge off at the chairs.
Looking at B&Q, the following seem most likely candidates:
    Hardboard
    Plywood
    MDF

I use optical mice, so no glossy varnishing.
I actually prefer not to have a mousepad either, but I suppose i could suffer one if need be.

ply might splinter when cut so the finish on the mdf will be better. but it will get shiny with use.

you could rout the edge yourelf i suppoe.

B&Q can be very hit and miss for cutting, they "Dont Do Project Cuts" I've been told on at least one occasion, seems they only want to cut it small enough to get in your car or whatever and then you're on your own after that.

Go when it's quiet and you should have less hassle, you could also point out to them that although the first X cuts are free, you are paying for every cut after that and there is no advertised limit.

Edit: Pretty sure they wont do the angled bit alright

MDF would be the handiest material to use, a bit of sandpaper would take the sharp edge off it, you wouldn't need a router.

If B&Q or woodworkers won't cut the angle PM me I might know someone around the area. It's a 5 minute job for someone with a skillsaw.
