Anyone know of a clinic where you can have bloods taken without being referred by a Doctor?

no, any place i know of requires a doctor to sign a form saying what tests are required

That's my experience too sam34. Such a pain not being able to look after ourselves without having to go through a Doctor.

If you can get a doctor to specify what tests you need to get you can hire a private phlebotomist to take your blood. There's one in Dublin that will come to your home and do it there if you need that. More info here : http://www.phlebotomy.ie/

If you want to have blood tests taken privately and sent abroad for analysis you also need to have blood centrifuged in a lab .As far as I know that is a bit of a pain to arrange. If you find anyway to manage that do come back and let us know.
    Good luck.

I sent a thyroid blood test abroad and it wasn't centrifuged.

As far as I know, before a lab will process a sample for any particular test, the name and contact details of the requesting doctor must be on the request form so that they can be contacted if the results are abnormal and require further attention and also so they know where to send the written report. Also certain tests e.g. genetic tests, would require consent forms to be filled out. Laboratories will have a list of GPs registered with them and will only accept samples from them.

If there is a test that can't be done in that lab, it will be sent on by that lab to a larger laboratory/private laboratory or if necessary abroad (only very specialised tests- the majority of lab tests can be performed in Ireland). If a sample has to be transported to a different hospital for testing, the original lab who received the request/sample will perform any processing e.g. centrifugation/seperation required to ensure the sample remains viable for testing (if possible - certain tests must be analysed within a certain time frame for results to accurate/stored at certain temps so if these conditions aren't met prior to the sample arriving in the lab there is nothing they can do and so they will be rejected!).

Not all samples require centrifugation (FBCs don't but most biochemistry tests do) but for those that do, they should be centrifuged on the same day as collection to ensure accurate results, (think some GPs may do this themselves if they can't get them to the lab in a reasonable amount of time)

Hi there Splendour i was thinking if you wanted to get blood work done privatley i.e not wanting your gp to know presuming you have one. would be to go into one of the walk in clincs in the city centre and get them to do the tests i know its still a doc doing them
