How to install a new gear shift?

Hey, I left my bike in to get it fixed up (Rothar in Phibsborough, nice place :) ) and the guy said that the gear shifter for the front derailleur is wrecked.

He said I should install a new one on the lower part of the frame (see pic). How would I source a good one of these, and I'd like to have a go at installing it myself so I'm wondering how I'd do that as well? I know how to tighten and align the brake cables for normal gears, but is there anything more I should know?

    Thanks for any help!

You'll need a set of downtube shifters (these, or these) -both out of stock, but you'll know what to look for now!

In terms of installing, this might help.

Why not get them to do it in the shop? Or at least, I know they have/sell those parts...!
