One that springs to mind for me is 'Midnight Cowboy' - which is also a firm favourite for me as a film... this track never fails to put shivers through me.

For movie soundtracks, i think the Forrest Gump one is hard to beat. For movie scores, the tunes to Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves is absolutely stunning. The late Michael Kamen did a superb job on this, the film's intro theme has to be the best ever.

For tv series, the BBC's Ashes to Ashes is quality. All early 80s stuff like The Jam and Roxy Music. Different class.

Velvet Goldmine had a pretty good soundtrack what with Roxy Music, T. Rex, Lou Reed and though no songs it had a Bowie vibe.

I've been listening to score soundtracks alot lately and Hanz Zimmer is simply fantastic - he consistently presents brilliant, uplifting music!

    Best scores imo:

    Transformers
    The Dark Knight
    The Pacific
    Band of Brothers

If you're into 80's music you can't beat the Donnie Darko soundtrack:

    1. "Never Tear Us Apart" by INXS – 3:04
    2. "Head Over Heels" by Tears for Fears – 4:16
    3. "Under the Milky Way" by The Church – 4:58
    4. "Lucid Memory" by Sam Bauer and Gerard Bauer – 0:46
    5. "Lucid Assembly" by Gerard Bauer and Mike Bauer – 0:52
    6. "Ave Maria" by Vladimir Vavilov and Paul Pritchard – 2:57
    7. "For Whom the Bell Tolls" by Steve Baker and Carmen Daye – 3:12
    8. "Show Me (Part 1)" by Quito Colayco and Tony Hertz – 2:05
    9. "Notorious" by Duran Duran – 4:00
    10. "Stay" by Oingo Boingo – 3:38
    11. "Love Will Tear Us Apart" by Joy Division – 3:23
    12. "The Killing Moon" by Echo & the Bunnymen – 5:55

And then there's the theme song as well which is amazing.

    3 Platoon
    4 Kill Bill Vol 1
    5 The Mission

    Glad someone mentioned it:D

Glad someone else mentioned Judgement Night, and along similar lines The Saint (Val Kilmer's version) is great too!

Underrated among Tarantino(-ish!) soundtracks but easily the equal of any of them is the soundtrack of From Dusk Til Dawn. Grosse Pointe Blank has a properly good (mostly) 80s soundtrack. Watchmen had a great mix of classics and more obscure choices.

Best one I've heard in a long time is the Kick-Ass soundtrack. Worth it for The Dickies' version of The Banana Splits theme song alone!

    2 not mentioned.
Hackers - still a good album if you like dance music.
24 hour party people - the film is about factory records and has sex pistols, joy division, new order and happy mondays on it.

    control - joy division :D:D

+1 Well, I haven't actually heard the soundtrack, but I can assume it's brilliant.

Almost Famous was also pretty good if for no other reason than America, Sparks & Simple Man are on it (bit of a guilty pleasure).

Edit: Somebody mentioned it above, but Grosse Point Blank is also a great (if inaccurate) soundtrack. Damnit, Singles and Into The Wild too!
