The number of FTTH households in the Netherlands is expected to reach 1.5 million by 2014, or around 19 percent of all homes, according to Telecompaper's latest report on the Dutch FTTH market. Around 32 percent of households should have access to the fibre-to-the-home services by the same date. At the end of 2009, an estimated 5.7 percent of Dutch households had access to FTTH and 2.4 percent used the services. All in all, FTTH has been rolled out to some degree in almost 50 municipalities. According to the market researcher, 2009 was a moderately successful year for FTTH, which saw several new projects and participants enter the market. Competition from DSL, with its latest VDSL2 variety, and cable companies, rolling out Docsis 3.0, has slowed the roll-out of FTTH somewhat, and financing issues and the economic crisis further limited growth. However growth has continued in early 2010, and Telecompaper expects 2010 may end with FTTH projects in some state of development in at least 70 municipalities. The report found Reggefiber is the clear market leader, with 93 percent of all homes passed and 83 percent of all subscribers. The Telecompaper Consumer Panel shows that the rise of FTTH comes primarily at the expense of cable operators, in areas where FTTH has been rolled out on a large scale. Based on interviews with market participants, the report describes the current state of the market and includes company profiles of FTTH market players.
