Sick of online shooters...

I used to like them back when you couldn't hear people's annoying voices, and back when it was mostly fast paced deathmatching, where someone could probably kill you 3 times in 5 seconds. Yeah I know that stuff is still out there to a degree, but nowadays it's so different.

The whole Call of Duty thing is so irritating. The last two seemed like army recruitment tools designed to appeal to impressionable young boys (those whiny idiots on the microphones). Play acting at mowing down middle eastern people seems a little twisted, seeing as that's exactly what's actually going on in real life right now in the world. Why so topical? Why not just stick with zombies, nazis and fictional bad guys? Anyway...

Plus I'm sick of games that require almost weekly updates clogging up my connection. Or games that crunch so many numbers during play that my system is maxed out and using lots of electricity.

I'm seriously thinking of downgrading my PC - I'm getting tired of having a system that sounds like a jet engine, especially considering that I seem to only use it for email and fapping these days.

I dunno.... I fired up a game of TF2 recently and felt like such a loser for doing so. I just want to know - does anyone else feel the same way? Maybe it's just that I'm now in my late twenties, and I've lost interest. Is that just what happens?

Since one of your interests is fapping, you could try chatroulette.

Although that's kind of an online shooter.

Maybe try the unreal tournaments. Even the original. They're all quite fast paced, and usually don't have people microphones.

I know what you mean by a noisy computer. You just need to invest in a fan control system/quieter fans/water cooling. Mine was really noisy with 5 case fans + CPU fan + GPU fan + PSU fan(s), but I took out one and put used a fan control to quieten them down when I was just browsing.

It's normal to get tired of things for a while. Go out and enjoy the good weather... without breathing in ash... you will appreciate your computer more next Winter when you're trying to distract yourself from the cold and misery.

Assholes just populate the online market now, anyways.

I play either Left 4 Dead 1 or 2 most nights and the whiny voices do my head in.

One asian dude just shouts into his microphone "LOL"

Though there was one English teenager who would flip out and scream into his microphone, the rest of us found it hilarious and kept rising him.

Yeah I own all the Unreal games - probably one of my favs. But I just find I'm tired of the whole thing. Maybe you're right and it's more of a seasonal thing for some.

Funnily enough my computer has 4 fans, one of which is 120mm, and they all make very little noise - the main culprit is the graphics card (with the built-in fan/heatsink). I just feel guilty running such a power hungry PC these days.

Hahaha online shooter, I like that! It's ok, the general public are too ugly and would probably make me go flat. I'll do my online shooting at youporn and pornhub :D Hey isn't it funny how many videos on those sites have zillions of views, yet you never hear about them? Ah well, only **** look at those sites anyway!

Yeah, now every fecker has a fecking internet connection - there's no more gaming etiquette or respect.

Online games have a mute button, you know.

And this aspect is why I love PC games. You can find a server that has a close, tight community, you get to know the people, and no bitching and whining is ever present in them.

Console games is a game of russian roulette. You could get a good group of people to play with, but 90% of the time you'll get a bunch of whiney bitchy 12 year old bed wetters.

What's wrong with playing TF2? I play because of the distinctly fewer number of over-medicated teenagers screaming into their mics all the time (aside from being a more fun game anyway). It seems to be one of the few games where the community's just that bit more accommodating and pleasant, insofar as a group of strangers online can be. Not always of course, but they're just a bit less immature.

I too am in my late 20s, and have just gone off online "team" games completely at this stage, pretty much for all the reasons mentioned above. I'm not going to pretend I'm in some White Ivory tower, pining for the good old days, but there's definitely something wrong with modern online shooters that they seem to have a large proportion of ... internet-trash.

In any case, there is always the mute button :)

Maybe play some games that aren't the latest and greatest and have an older target audience? I had a fun games of Air Buccaneers (UT 2004 mod) yesterday and the strongest language was an "Oh gosh":

Rofl, that looks great. I agree. Playing older games is usually more fun with 3/4 of the people more mature. You have to look beyond the latest graphics and into mods for variety and communities.

Was I doing that? I'm just trying to be honest here.

There's nothing wrong with TF2. It's just that I felt like I was wasting my time and should be doing something else.

I actually prefer adventure games now - I wish they'd make more.

Yeah that's another thing I find I've lost interest in. There was a time when graphics and framerates meant everything to me. I just couldn't wait to shove in the latest video card and cream myself over the improved visuals. Not anymore though... I'd rather just have a quiet PC.

Joining random servers and deathmatching etc in games becomes quite boring after the initial novelty wears off.

Perhaps you could get into a particular game, ranked servers, start dueling, joining ladders, cups, competitions, studying replays/demos, etc.

Or even better get onto a team and get into the whole league play. Very addictive and rewarding when you get a good team and start making progress.

As regards whiney little 14 year olds, well I find the older or rarer mods (battlefield 2 mods, half-life mods, very tactical shooters, etc) have a more mature crowd and you can generally get much classier teamplay orientated games without all the ****, even better if you get onto password servers for gathers etc

Such a vast interesting fps (and rts, etc) gaming world out there that I think the majority of gamers really don't know even exists.

I agree with the original poster there.

There's now such a massive oversaturated market for online shoot-em up games. Splinter Cell used to be a stealth game with the option of action centered around a very solid single player campaign and the multiplayer or online stuff was a bonus. Now this new one seems to just be centered around the online shooting with the campaign being not as important.

I've watched people play Modern Warfare 2 and it's just for people with a short attention span. I'd echo the point about it being recruitment matieral for young males getting into an army or whatever. Though I'd wager many MW players might not be of peak physical stature!

I don't, and that's my point. I haven't bought a console since the PS2 and I don't intend to ever get one again.

What's cups? I thought it was a game invented by Joey and Chandler..

Anyway, I appreciate your thoughts and suggestions, but to be honest I think I'll just go outside and get some sun.

Haha! Good point! Though the reach of that game is far enough to net lots of playdough-minded boys who are in reasonable shape, and just itching to fly off to a sandy location and live out their fantasies, wield the actual guns from the game.... and have nightmares about it 20 years later of course.

Good point! I'd like to add Resi 5 to that used-to-be-good-but-action-made-it-crap category.

Ok I do like FPS shooters (boo), but wait for it the old shooters (yay!). Although I've never played any of the CoD's online I have watched the lil bro do so. And it seems a bit tedious!

I have finally gotten around to playing Doom3 (when my pc would finally run it. All it took was a format....no seriously!). And I can't believe that the single player is just so much fun! It does everything right to confuse and alienate the player to the point of turning at every sound and not wanting to go in to that vent....nooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

I don't see why you need to smirk towards someone making a fair point. The Modern Wafares of the world don't bother me but when you look at how so many games are just trying to cram themselves into that online action shooter market it's just overkill. Splinter Cell used to be a great stealth game possibly even a better stealth game than Metal Gear Solid - as it focused on the stealth stuff rather than the storyline stuff - and now it's just gone the way of every game.

Convction looks nothing like the previous series of games and looks everything like a lot of other action games out at the minute and due out.

Gone are storylines in games and in has come this bizarre market where people just wanna run around in online matches shooting each other. Nothing wrong with that of course if it's your preference but it's sad to see the demise of the single player campaign to make room for another Action Deathmatch series.

Ripe old age of 26 here, I still play public games occasionally, mostly if there aren't enough steam buddies online to get a game going. It's a pain alright, people seem to only be out to win by whatever means necessary, and don't take either winning or losing at all gracefully. It's rare I get a game of anything where someone doesn't start piping up about how the teams aren't fair. I mostly mute people I don't know.

It does get to me though, that I essentially have to separate myself from the people I play with or I'll just get so ****ing annoyed that I'll have to leave the game. Back when I played the original UT and RTCW and the likes, there'd be decent banter to go along with the trash talk, I even go to know people who frequented the same servers as me and to this day regularly enough join various games that they're playing.

right, when it was bad, when people were actually making alot of products which have demand, more products, means all of them have to have something to stand out, so ofc quality mark going up, perfect example MW2 and BC2.

If you are not in to these sort of games, then dont fecking play it, no one holding a glock18 to your head and forces you to play it, right?

I see lots of tampons for sale in tesco, but i dont go bitching about tesco selling them, even if they are uselles to me... Get mine point?

I love a nice online shooter now and then with the lads, but it does not mean i dont play ather games. I love DOW2, I LOVE Settlers7 ( which is actually complete opposite from all hardcore gore shooter games).

As for stealth games, they all just dissapeared in theyr assh*le unfortunatly, MGS was awesome up until 4th one, as they just felt themself as gods, and overkilled themselfs.

The online portion of games has become less and less appealing to me. I played Modern Warfare 2 through the single player and enjoyed it because I wanted to follow the story. I don't have the time/attention span to put enough work into the multiplayer to get to a level where I will enjoy it and not just be fodder for the more experienced/dedicated players.

I really enjoyed TF2 for a while thanks mostly to how manic it could get that is made it a bit more of a level playing field.

Otherwise my online gaming is restricted to friends on the xbox. FIFA mostly and the odd time co-op where I get the best of both worlds.

I'm a huge fan of story-driven games though which is why I've completely converted over to an RPG fan. 40 plus hours of immersion and no 12 year old knob jockeys? Yes please. I still enjoy the odd shooter (playing and adoring Bioshock atm) but RPGs is where I find most of my enjoyment in modern gaming.

Still an online community going! A small one at that.

Stealth games bought in to the shooter genre to the point that Metal Gear Solid 4 resembled any other action shooter with the emphasis shifting from stealth to shooting everyone in sight and blowing **** up - there was still stealth but it's obvious they put a lot of work into the shooting elements. It seems like the stealth genre is all but finished though.

Yeah see this is what I'm trying to get across....
First off, I don't mind shooters, I like them.

My point is that the games market seems to be centred around online shooters now instead of story driven games. I don't know what the stats are like but I'd be interested to see what portion of new games from the last two years were based around an online shooting game - Splinter Cell Conviction is a perfect example. Very short single player campaign supplements an online game.

how can you be sick of online shooters?

i think theres too many sub-par online shooters. my favourite genre and its apparently huge backcatalogue, yet why do i even only invest in 3-4 a year?
n why can't even one have the slick feel call of duty has?? surely we've yet to experience the best. ultra smooth non-linear experiences better be around the corner as i have not got forever

EDIT: i only invest in 1-2 a year. if the genre is indeed saturated, then there should be more of an expected quality. 'benchmarks' are not benchmarks for no reason
