Recovering Files Deleted from External hard Drive

My girlfriend accidentally deleted part of her final college project and is desperately scrambling around for a way to recover the files. Can anyone recommend free soft ware which will allow her to do so or if there is no decent free option a pay for program which will do the job. Ahy help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi, this can depend on what happened.
If a file has been deleted and needs to be recovered, I have used Recuva successfully:
http://www.piriform.com/recuva/download

On the other hand, if part of a file was deleted and then the file was saved, this probably won't work and you will need another option.
How exactly did the work get deleted?

She managed to recover them and is currently putting the finishing touches to her end of year animated short.
