    Hi,

Weird problem on friends Eircom broadband someone might have a few ideas....

he can be surfing along happily for a few minutes and then for no aparent reason can no longer connect to any sites, usually stops working for about half an hour and then starts working again, I have done as much investigation as I can think of, can't find anything wrong:

    - It's not the computer hardware, tested the laptop, it works fine when connecting to my wireless
    - It's not a DNS issue (my first thought), I set secondry DNS to 8.8.8.8 (Google) and problem persists
    - It's not interference on the phone line, line stats are fine and there is no change in the stats when the surfing is not working, it is not dropping the connection/disconnecting
    - Router seems to be working fine

I'm stumped, it's a 3Mb line, tested torrents and got 300Kb down. The only thing I noticed is that when the internet is working it not as fast as it should be, for example that AVG link scanner takes ages to check the links in search results. I have my doubts Eircom support will be much use, better chance of getting some answers here I think.

    Thanks

    What are the line stats?

I presume wireless is being used - have you tried using an ethernet connection to see if it happens?

Have you tried chaning the wireless channel? Any other wireless connections on the same channel? Any wireless gizmos in the house?

    Hi Sconsey

Had the same problem last week and drove me nuts.
Had to get eircom engineer out and worked out it was the modem.
Does he have the netopia 2247 modem and if so for how long or how long does he have his modem.
My modem said dsl was connected but some pages would not load.
On the phone for about a week with eircom and they kept dropping my speed to see would that work but every 2 days it would go again.
Best thing i can say is try and get an engineer out or if you can see one around see will he check it out for you. It only takes about a minute to check it out with his handheld pc.
