Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I think. Just spent a week flicking through all the stations while driving around the UK and I just thought it was so dumbed down. And Radio 1 plays rubbish music....I was never so happy hearing Today Fm arriving at Holyhead.

BBC Radio has much a much higher standard of shows than anything on radio here, IMO. I podcast about 5 of them every week

BBC Radio 1 is the greatest radio station in the world!

    End of!

The Late 60s , the 70s 80s and 90s were the golden years for BBC radio .BBC 2 took over were BBC 1 had left of and plays a bit of everything , oldies and newer stuff to cater for all age groups , genres ,musical tastes .

I sorely miss radio 1. Driving back from Belfast the other day I was heartbroken when I lost reception on the station. There is nothing in Ireland that can compare to the mix of genres and DJs on radio 1.

Radio One? FFS try somthing else! Like 6 Music (while you can!)

  • Registered Users Posts: 177 ✭✭paulhannon

BBC Radio 1 are THE BEST at what they do, same goes for BBC Radio 2!
Radio 2 caters for those that have matured (that's not an insult), Radio 1 caters for the new listeners, new trends etc and NO station in this country is anyway near the standard of the BBCs output.

Aside from the Beeb, British local and commercial radio is crap. It's as crap if not more crappy than our 104, 98 (etc.) general papfm gunk.

Agreed, although there is a greater variety of stations dedicated to such crap. For example there are 'urban' stations and 'dance' stations that play all sorts of crap all day long :)

BBC 4, 5 Live and BBC 6 are the best of the BBC's but 1 and 2 have some great shows too!

The regional stations are very 'regional' :D

    are you joking??
all you hear on irish radios is the same songs all over again and again, quite annoying.
Uk radio selection is actually savage. just try comparing likes of spin and fm104 with galaxy fm. day and night:rolleyes:

But there are good stations here, you've just got to twiddle the dial away from the twaddle. Radio na Life on 106.6 for e.g.
Sure one can point out some good examples but that's because they're playing stuff you like.
On the whole your common or garden commercial station in Britain is just that: commercial (and very at that). There are more specialist music stations in Britain to take your pick from, if that floats your boat. For e.g: Bengali rap.
As said by r3nufl, local radio is very, very local.

Well for me there's no station i actually think is great here it's all a bit meh, but over there, it's defo BBC Radio 1. I also quite like London's Xfm.

Been living in England 2 years now and I've finally found a station I can listen to, Jack FM, the reason - no DJs, few ad breaks.

The rest are rubbish, either ads after every song or 2-3 twits nattering on about how wonderful it is to be them 80% of the time.

I'd be Radio 1 and 2 myself but have been very happily served in Dublin, music wise, by a couple of local stations.
However if I lived in Cork I'd have to kill myself...while being a fine county with a fine city it is completely bereft of a decent station...a bit like Bolton just prittier.

Irish radio is on the whole, utterly appalling. Even our national broadcaster produces a lot of drivel and is riddled with adverts.

Compare the likes of Nicky Campbell and Richard Bacon on 5Live with Joe Duffy and Gerry Ryan...worlds apart.

In the UK they have 6Music for people who are into more alternative music, while we have the mediocre 2XM and Phantom, which was great when it was a pirate, but turned into playlist obsessed commercial radio when it received a Comreg licence.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,846 ✭✭✭✭eth0_

I have just tuned into 2XM. They stream at 32kbps. Yes, THIRTY-TWO. *bangs head against wall*.

And why are 90% of their shows just one hour long?

Listen to the 6Music streams whenever I can, can't belive they are shutting it down.

It's only a _proposal_ right now. Your feedback can help to save it, please fill in the BBC Trust review here: https://consultations.external.bbc.co.uk/departments/bbc/bbc-strategy-review/consultation/consult_view

6Music has seen a massive increase in listeners and overall listening hours since the news broke - and that's just for listeners using the live iPlayer streams. RAJAR figures are released in 2 weeks time and it is looking promising that we'll see a huge increase there, too.

I've also noticed a lot of 6Music adverts on BBC TV recently (I haven't seen any in at least a year). There was an advert for Adam Buxton's show just after Jonathan Ross' Friday night show. Why would they bother with this if there has been a fait accompli at the Big British Castle?

Doesn't matter, they don't check the originating IP.

BBC Radio 4...a major reason just to stay alive.

found bbc 5live when i was younger and have been listening to the sport on it since. this is the only british staion i listen to really. in fairness irish radio is very poor.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 156 ✭✭kpbdublin

What a joke! Life in the British Isles would simply not be worth living without BBC Radio 4.

I gave up Irish Radio about a year ago after years of listening to TodayFM.
I now listen to Chris Moyles in the morning and while he is not to everyones taste I can understand why his listening figures are so high, a great team and extremely funny without much effort.
The only time I listen to Irish radio now is when radio dj's are on hols.
Phantom is the only Irish station I would consider.

bbc radio 1 is great, its all I listen to, they are about 2 months ahead of us in terms of playing new commercial music and about 6 months in terms of dance and rap. that is if Irish radio ever plays quality non commercial pop music!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 785 ✭✭✭Shane10

actually i dont mind listening to dave fanning when i get the time. does have some interesting pieces on his shows.

I listen to Radio 1 when driving down the M1, when it fades out, I tune into Newstalk.

Radio 1 is better than most other stations available in Ireland. Plus, no headwreacking ads every 5 minutes!

As well as the BBCs which are excellent, I've a soft spot for Planet Rock (digital station) which plays classic rock.

if i'm at home during the day would quite happily listen to BBC radio 2 for most of it via my lappy, i go to sleep most nights listening to talksport. when i'm in london, will listen to R1, R2, virgin, XFM, and LBC (london version of newstalk but with alot more audience involvment) via the MP3. if anything OP that statement more applies to irish radio, too comericalised, too pop and manufactured, a month or two behind to the music being played on R1, etc etc.

Irish radio not terrible, bur very little choice, will only usally listen to todayfm, and only then at certain times of day.

There isn't an actual licenced dance station in the whole of the UK. The "dance" licenced stations play urban and charting electro house, that is all.

R1, R2, R4 and Six Music all fantastic for a vast array of "not enough hours in the day to listen to" reasons

Miss the old days of R1 in the evening with Lamacq, Peel and Mary-Ann Hobbs a lot.

on one of old car radios had only three channels. Virgin Radio was one of them. Christian O'Connell had a great show on there. English DJS are very good if you look hard enough for them.

BBC R 2,4 and 5 Live and when I want peace and quiet to read,Classic FM!
Haven't listened to Irish radio for about ten years but I suppose the money isn't here to produce quality radio and the BEEB do have a sixty million population in the UK to generate funds from the licence compared to our four million!
