I start this thread tentatively because ive only had a quick look and i didnt see one already, however it also seems like something that would have been brought up already so apologies if this has been well discussed before now.

I was told recently that the park in Merrion Square in Dublin is to be renamed and there was also to be a public vote on it, I havent heard a thing since.

Has anyone heard if this is true and what the name is?

What does everyone think of the idea, especially seeing as its being changed from the very topical name of "Archbishop Ryan Park"?

I'll just go out on a limb here and assume this place is in Dublin.
    AH/DC.

Well unfortunetely Ronan Keating is still alive so it won't be named after him (thank God).

"Merrion Square" is the perfect name for it. It avoids future problems, like "the Stalin Peace Price", or completely fadish names as another poster mentioned like Ronan Keating.

It's not the Square they're talking about renaming though, only the park in the square. Honestly I didn't know what it was called myself - always just called the whole thing Merrion Square.

I know, and I think "Merrion Square" is an ideal name for the park, like "Stephens Green" perfectly describes the park there.

I've heard the Archbishop Ryan name was partly to say thanks to the Church for allowing it to remain a park and not building a Cathedral there.

    Ah I got ya.

Well in that case, let's call it Merrion Square Park, y'know, just to be literal. :)
