"Recruitment" and "intake" are, to my mind, two different things. But still, good to hear!

Time to start running the roads again folks. Re sit of medicals inevitable.

Anyone contacted this TD to clarify?? I don't want to be so pessimistic but I won't believe it until it is announced. And like someone else just posted an intake and recruitment drive are two different things..would be great if it was both!

This is the best news all year....lets hope its true.....dont want to spoil the ecitement but id like to hear it from Dermot Aherne himself.....maybe give it a couple of days, i think we can start believing if the media at large start running with it....time will tell. Im off the fags as of today anyway just in case!!!

There's always one.....negatitivity is rampant on here
She'd hardly post it on her own website and go to papers with it if it wasnt true.
Why would they hold another recruitment campaign with all those in the system and also her main concern is to the development of the area and bringing business to Tipperary.

  • Registered Users Posts: 101 ✭✭gardapa

Yeah what i mean is it would be good if the Minister himself announced it then id believe it...im only being pessimistic because of all the rumours ive heard! How many people are stuck in the system??

    not sure.
    id say close to 300
at least this is something in writing though.....
most concrete rumour we've had since moratorium started

  • Registered Users Posts: 101 ✭✭gardapa

Yeah it is coming from a named source this time but hasen't been announced...just seen on facebook that there is a graduation in templemore today hopefully something will be announced at that! 300 damn that could hold off a recruitment drive until next year!

Well atleast it is some good news but as gardapa I won't believe it til I hear it confirmed by Mr.Ahern. Do you guys know if they'll extend the medicals as mine expires tomorrow!

they always say medicals last 6 months but last years intake some of them were 8 months and some a year so i take it they'll manage with what they have to get in.....last year they had to rush through a group so god only knows what they'll do with regard to medicals
official stance is they last 6 months (ish)

Well god only knows what will happen. There are so many of us in the system who have passed everything that not all of us are going to get in if they decide to have an intake in August. Also if it does happen I wonder how they will decide who gets to go in first!

It is supposed to go my the order of merit system from exams, then it goes to first checks complete then as they come in it goes back to order of merit...supposedly.....then again people from batch 3 went in last May

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 251 ✭✭pink star

That is why I said it! It's supposed to be in order of merit but I was one of the 1st few from batch 2! Suppose we will just have to wait and see. Good luck anyway!

I wonder has anyone been onto Hq about it ? They probably havent heard anything yet. With regard to whos in first, I would have thought those waiting the longest would be next in.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 251 ✭✭pink star

I haven't called HR because they will tell you the same thing that they do all the time! That they don't know and not to believe anything until an official statement has been made! I would have thought at this stage that it's who is waiting the longest gets in first!

Minister for Justice Dermot Ahern says recruitment in the Gardaí will re-start before the end of the year.

Ahern made the comments following a meeting with the Garda Commissioner at a passing out parade for new recruits in Templemore this morning.

Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that GRA leadership is being called to a meeting with Commissioner Fachtna Murphy tomorrow to discuss their criticism of the Government during their annual conference in Limerick earlier this week.

Im not that surprised, I remember Ahern said he'd lift the ban towards the end of 2010 last year in an interview with the Irish MOS. Still good to hear it now! Positive news.

I'd say they will begin the process in November and begin the training in February.

    Great News :D

Can I just ask is this an intake into templemore or an actual recruitment drive where we have to do the apptitude test interview etc????

    That's great news.
I have a question though. How long does the recruitment process take - from the date applications close to the date you start at Templemore?

I ask because I'm in college now. By the end of 2010 I'll be half way through my second year of my 4 year degree which means I will have 2 and a half years left. Say if the whole process lasts for a year and a half, could I then defer for 1 year?

    Any help much appreciated.

Nobody is the same; it depends on your security clearence for the most part. As everyone knows, this takes ages (at the very least). There might be a problem in your medical and you could be deferred.

If you really wanted the job...would you defer?

That's the argument I'm currently battling with at the moment. I could have three years of college done by the time training starts ( assuming that everything goes well of course). I would essentially be throwing three years down the drain. Could you defer for as long as a year though and if you did, is there a chance that you would lose your place?

Well they'll have to deal with the people with everything done waiting to go in first but you can be sure a recruitment campaign will follow shortly after...

Thank god I've already applied because I say the numbers applying for a campaign will be CRAZY!

I was begining to wonder if this day would ever come but thank god it has. Hopefully we'll see a bit of movement with medicals shortly. See you guys later, i'm off to the gym:D

Was in exactly the same position as you, Yes you can get a deferal to finish your degree, i applied half way through second year college and got the defferal to finish my degree and im finishing my masters in May due to the freeze did a masters while im waited.

Basically when you do the aptitude test you are ranked in order of your score if you pass, if you come top of the country in the test you are first interviewed and first medical in the new group and first intake in that batch. I came 35th so see above for process.

I failed my medical on the hearing, had to go to a specialist for further examination and between the jigs and the reels took a bit of time correspondance with Garda HQ and i got the all clear eventually failing the med bought me some time. Got my job offer then in 4th year college, maybe late 2008, for the last intake before the freeze to start in April/May 2009. I wrote a letter to the head if intakes, stating that i had my fee's paid for college, was commited to the guards but would like the opportunity to finish my degree and got the deferral till the end of my degree. Has been a freeze since so i did a masters while im waiting.

If your applying from the start chances are that by the time you get called, you will be in the last or second last year of college. My Dad is a garda he says Garda HQ are used to dealing with requests like this all the time and are generally very responsive.

PS in the interview if you mention about deferring, forget about it, get the offer first and then go about deferrals anything else would shoot yourself in the foot.

Thanks a million. So if I applied now and everything went well but I failed my eyetest for example ( I only barely had 6/18 vision in my last eye test), would I be given a 6 month extension period to get laser eye surgery and then be allowed to repeat the medical?
I've heard of this happening before but I'm not quite sure about it.
    Thanks,
    Rothmans.

I rang up Garda HQ to find whether the new recruitment drive announced yesterday is just for people already on the panel waiting to be called or is it a new drive for new applicants. But they where none the wiser as they had 'nt been told.Does anybody have any information if it is a new recruitment drive for new applicants or for people on the panel??

If HQ cannot confirm the above I don't think anyone here can to be honest unless someone here is rubbing shoulders with Dermot Ahern!

Suppose no one can really answer that yet, but more than likely both..

Reason I say both is because Minister Ahern was on the news last night and said he's hoping to start a recruitment campaign in the Summer
