Can I just ask is this an intake into templemore or an actual recruitment drive where we have to do the apptitude test interview etc????

    That's great news.
I have a question though. How long does the recruitment process take - from the date applications close to the date you start at Templemore?

I ask because I'm in college now. By the end of 2010 I'll be half way through my second year of my 4 year degree which means I will have 2 and a half years left. Say if the whole process lasts for a year and a half, could I then defer for 1 year?

    Any help much appreciated.

Nobody is the same; it depends on your security clearence for the most part. As everyone knows, this takes ages (at the very least). There might be a problem in your medical and you could be deferred.

If you really wanted the job...would you defer?

That's the argument I'm currently battling with at the moment. I could have three years of college done by the time training starts ( assuming that everything goes well of course). I would essentially be throwing three years down the drain. Could you defer for as long as a year though and if you did, is there a chance that you would lose your place?

I think the best people to ask would be Garda HR in the Phoenix Park

I'd say they will begin the process in November and begin the training in February.

    Great News :D

Well they'll have to deal with the people with everything done waiting to go in first but you can be sure a recruitment campaign will follow shortly after...

Thank god I've already applied because I say the numbers applying for a campaign will be CRAZY!

Was in exactly the same position as you, Yes you can get a deferal to finish your degree, i applied half way through second year college and got the defferal to finish my degree and im finishing my masters in May due to the freeze did a masters while im waited.

Basically when you do the aptitude test you are ranked in order of your score if you pass, if you come top of the country in the test you are first interviewed and first medical in the new group and first intake in that batch. I came 35th so see above for process.

I failed my medical on the hearing, had to go to a specialist for further examination and between the jigs and the reels took a bit of time correspondance with Garda HQ and i got the all clear eventually failing the med bought me some time. Got my job offer then in 4th year college, maybe late 2008, for the last intake before the freeze to start in April/May 2009. I wrote a letter to the head if intakes, stating that i had my fee's paid for college, was commited to the guards but would like the opportunity to finish my degree and got the deferral till the end of my degree. Has been a freeze since so i did a masters while im waiting.

If your applying from the start chances are that by the time you get called, you will be in the last or second last year of college. My Dad is a garda he says Garda HQ are used to dealing with requests like this all the time and are generally very responsive.

PS in the interview if you mention about deferring, forget about it, get the offer first and then go about deferrals anything else would shoot yourself in the foot.

Thanks a million. So if I applied now and everything went well but I failed my eyetest for example ( I only barely had 6/18 vision in my last eye test), would I be given a 6 month extension period to get laser eye surgery and then be allowed to repeat the medical?
I've heard of this happening before but I'm not quite sure about it.
    Thanks,
    Rothmans.

I rang up Garda HQ to find whether the new recruitment drive announced yesterday is just for people already on the panel waiting to be called or is it a new drive for new applicants. But they where none the wiser as they had 'nt been told.Does anybody have any information if it is a new recruitment drive for new applicants or for people on the panel??

If HQ cannot confirm the above I don't think anyone here can to be honest unless someone here is rubbing shoulders with Dermot Ahern!

Suppose no one can really answer that yet, but more than likely both..

Reason I say both is because Minister Ahern was on the news last night and said he's hoping to start a recruitment campaign in the Summer

Well atleast it is some good news but as gardapa I won't believe it til I hear it confirmed by Mr.Ahern. Do you guys know if they'll extend the medicals as mine expires tomorrow!

i was told by hq before that they can be extended to a year depending on their needs, so hopefully they will. Mine expired in march.

    just read this online

"We will be commencing recruitment panels before the end of the year," he said.

does this mean a new competition this year?

commencing recruitment panel means current panels, otherwsie he'd have said new campaign which hq wouldnt know about cause they deal with ongoing panels...new campaigns go through publicjobs

I don't know its hard to say. From what i heard him say last night and from this sounds like a new drive..

I don't know, even tho I was over the moon yesterday, I not sure what is going to happen with us waiting on the existing panel....

They'll have people in Templemore by end of year, thats why the local TD down there broke the news,
To do this they need to call people off current panel as otherwise will be at least a year before a group goes into training.....
i'd expect an intake in August (normally after bank holiday) and a new drive around the same time

I hear what you are saying lad, but the way i see it is,
Forget there was ever a hold on recruitment. If a new campaign were to start in the new year it would be advertised on public jobs (January) aptitude test (march) interviews (may) and pct and med later by the time these are done with the new hopefuls then us poor buggers on the waiting list will have quite some time passed in the college. This is just me speculating tho, so i dont think they will dump the current waiting list as it would be a huge waist of money & resources, just my opinion.:)

Question: I'm doing my L.C. this summer and will be turning 18 in August, suppose the process of a new recruitment drive takes place in August would it be possible for me to apply, as i would have received my L.C. results and would have turn 18 by the time the process of recruiting would be finished(aptitude test, interview, med. etc.) ie. the intake into Templemore.

    Thanks for any info :D

You have to be aged between 18 and 35 and have the relevant qualifications in your leaving cert to apply. As far as I remember you have to produce your results and a birth certificate at aptitude stage. The requirements are to apply not to walk in the door of templemore. But if you're turning 18 in Aug then you could well be eligible for the next campaign. You'l have to ring HR when the next one starts and run it by them. Best of luck :)

What if you're on the other side of the age limit. I'm 34 this September. If I applied if there was a campaign during the summer, could I be too old by the time I got a medical (presuming if I passed everything else). Is the main thing appling before the age limit?
