Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

While illegal under the 1954 Act, sending a letter outlining a job opportunity is no way the same as rounding people up and shipping them north.

I see what you're saying but their letters informed them that unless they contacted the listed parties they will lose their jobseekers allowance. You can hardly call that legal!

I don't call it legal. It's an offence under the Defence Act. But in no way were there people being forced to join a foreign military. AFAIK they must contact tha agency, not the employer, besides that, I guarantee no-one would lose benefits for ignoring such letter.

I highly doubt that. The social welfare are rutless bas**rds who'll do anything to deny people their benefits.

It would never happen. There was enough uproar about the letter going round without people contacting their TD's over losing benefits.

True I suppose. I wonder the outcome though if this didn't come to light? It just shows that even the Social can't find jobs in Ireland for the unemployed!

Seriously, there are enough forums with people complaining about the government and public service, does this have to be one too?

    Hey folks!

I've spent the past half hour or so reading through this thread. Pretty interesting, some good posts and a lot of dumb ones too.

I'm in the process of joining the British Army myself. I've been up north, done the BARB test, chose my job preferences and had a little chat with the recruitment officer (who was from Dublin) Right now I just have to post up some medical forms and he'll let me know when I have to go to Britain for the fitness/medical tests.

About two years ago, I went for the Defence Forces. After a long drawn out process I didn't get it simply because the recruitment freeze rolled into town, so I decided to spend a year in Australia. From previous experience the British Amy are much better to deal with, and faster during the recruitment process - than the Defence Forces.

I see nothing wrong with joining a foreign army, a few people have abused me for my decision, but at the end of the day - its MY decision.

PS - If anyone is having trouble finding out how to get in contact with recruitment just let me know and I'll help you out.

Why the fascination with the Royal Irish? the Royal Artillery and Royal Engineers offer far more opportunity to do intresting courses such as becoming a diver, an FO/fWD fire support specialist etc, even joining long range patrol units and working alongside special forces.

Some people are so ignorant and hypocritical in their beliefs about the British. If they hate the British so much might as well hate the Scandinavians too, they did pretty much the same to Ireland after all.

The ADSC in belfast is cool. The run is not a 1.5miler as you have been told. Its 3 laps of a track, thats up and down hills, lose stones etc.

I just want you to keep it in mind, because it messed me up. I still finished in 10:22.

Once you pass the ADSC you will be shipped to Cattrick within 12 weeks. Its a great place.

Its a Military town. Around 50km Square of training ground.

    I would go back tomorrow.

If you need any info on anything, Contact me.

    Cheers! and good luck

Got a bit held up over the last few months but now have interview 2 next week and ADSC shortly after my recruiter said. Anyone any tips for the interview?
Are you currently serving? What regiment are you in?

Some people just like the thought of being an infantryman. That role can be quite challenging in itself.

interviews 2 and 3 are quite easy, interview 2 is with youre recruiter and interview 3 is with the "boss" of the office, ushally a warrent officer or alike.Make sure and where smart clothes(shirt, tie, slacks) and LEARN YOURE JOB BACKROUND.This is very important, especially for interview 3.Know where your doing Phase 1 and 2 training and for how long. Also know youre fitness leval i.e 1.5 mile run time, heave count and what youre doing to keep fit.

After that you will be sent to a pre-adsc or adsc "proper" as my recruiter calls it.At pre adsc you only stay one day and they test you on 1.5 mile run, heavs, jerry can's and ice-breaker.The idea is if you do bad, atleast you wont be giving a grade that will last 2 years. If you do good you will be sent to adsc "proper".

    Hope my experience helps.

Best of luck,And at adsc always put 110% effort in.If i did 22 easy heavs and you did 2 hard heavs, you would get more points cause you put more effort in.

I was hoping someone here could help me with a question i have.

I filled out an overseas enquiry for on the BA's website and got an e-mail back informing me of some available positions in the BA. It does say that an applicant has to have accomadation in the UK as one of the conditions. Does this include applicants from Ireland though?

Hey I had the same question when I started my application. I got onto the recruiters office and was told that rule does not apply to applicants from the republic. Good luck with your application!

PS thanks for that info paddycam. Did you apply through Portadown or eniskillen?

Yeah just apply as a regular applicant. The English, Irish, Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish applicats have the same entry form - on the form, just tick which one of the 5 apply to you.

I was going to aplly as a regular applicant but on the BA website it says you need an address in the UK to do this. I think not having a postcode could be a problem as well.

Doesn't apply to applicants living in the Republic of Ireland. Give the recruiting office in Portadown or Eniskillen a call and they'll send the application forms to your home address.

I was'nt aware of this. I thought i'd have to fill out an overseas application. I guess i'll give the recruiting offices a ring instead and have them sent out. instead.

Also one last question. When i was going through the overseas enquiry process it said applicants outside the UK need a sponsor living in the UK.

Are applicants from ROI exempt from this as well?

  • Registered Users Posts: 143 ✭✭rockagusroll

Yes, applicants from the republic apply exactly as applicants from the UK. There's a box to tick on the first page which has England Scotland Wales Northern Ireland and Irish Republic.

Just ring a damn recruitment office (Belfast or Portadown) and let them get it moving.

what are the options you can go for in the army ?

    infantry
    engineers

    what else ?

if you apply for them, do you go straight into them after training ?

I have an ordinary degree in IT, which is being horribly wasted here in Ireland.... also what are the security clearance requirements for the like of IT or comms ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,049 ✭✭✭discus

    1) go to armyjobs.mod.uk
    2) take a look at the sigs jobs

Most of them are open to Irish applicants. Very few enlisted jobs require UK citizenship - ROI'ers are fine for most posts it seems

  • Registered Users Posts: 143 ✭✭rockagusroll

I had a signals job as my first choice (installation tech) but had to change it as my recruiter said the Royal Signals still aren't open to Irish applicants for some reason.. I've changed to CIS specialist with the Engineers, looks very interesting!

  • Registered Users Posts: 143 ✭✭rockagusroll

At the end of the day, if you decided to join, it would be for yourself and your own reasons, nothing to do with the queen.

I'ts true, but i could still never work for the English government...You are in the irish army, ya? I think i seen one of your posts...Well if you are, will they be recruiting in two years? If not i'm going to go to college first.

Well done to all you Irish lads joining the armed forces. Just like your forefathers who fought together with English/Scottish people during WW1 and died together. I see no shame in Irish lads joining the BA.

  • Registered Users Posts: 116 ✭✭Lorelei

    Amcalster ?

Although I can't understand why anyone should wish to join the Penguins (RAF - all flap no fly) I think you will find that Irish citizens can join all parts of the British Force (RN. Army, RM and RAF) suggest you contact the RAF recruiting office in Belfast I imagine they still have one if not the get in touch with their recruiting direct.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,031 ✭✭✭Lockstep

I was browsing through the British military sites and the RAF and Royal Navy say you need at least 3 years residency in the UK to join up. Does that apply to Irish people as well?

Seems strange as so many Irish people serve with the British, if you need residency before joining up.

Yea they're pretty similar, just the signals is more based around the installation of communications. You going to apply then?
