I'm considering moving to New Ross in the future, whats the town like? Night life, sports clubs, the people, restaurants...

I like its location as its close to Waterford and Kilkenny and seems to be a good spot for commuting to work

How does it compare to the likes of Enniscorthy, Gorey or Wexford Town

Well ive lived in ross all my life so am totally impartial! Ha. But seriously, the night life is good but could be better, many pubs to choose from, and many types of pubs. Plenty of very good restaurants, chinese italian thai indian french regular pub grub take away and cafes. Two local soccer teams (tho celtic is much more successful than town :) ) very successful rugby team and a great GAA club, also Theres martial arts, boxing, snooker pool etc. And sure the people? We're the salt o the earth haha

Just like I'd never choose to move to Tramore. Because there are things about it that I don't like. Then again that's down to individual choice and preference.

There is a reasonably sized Eastern European population but then again there are two fairly large employers in the town (Lake Region and Nolan Transport), so people go where the work takes them. Personally know quite a few and find them grand, decent hard-working people.

NR is pretty much your average small town, some things better than others, some things not quite as you'd like them. Depends on what you're after. Its home to me too so, like Ledger, I'm probably somewhat biased. But I've lived away and chose to come back and raise my family here, so it can't be too bad. If you've any specific questions, feel free to ask.

I live in Waterford and spent many a good evening in New Ross. Great people, friendly and great sense of humour. Ross is near all what you might need. Sea is 30 minutes away with Hook within striking distance. Mount Leinster is 40 minutes away, Barrow valley for exploring. Close to Waterford 20 minutes. Kilkenny accessable also but road not great.Wexford town 30 minutes, Rosslare 40 minutes.
Safe place with very low crime rate compared to national average. Some good pubs and restaurants.
Of course there are eastern europeans living there as there are in all towns in Ireland. Less Africans there though which in my eyes is a big bonus.

Sean Connick is the local TD and a great guy so i would defintly recommend New Ross, plus it's better than Enniscorthy and Gorey by a long way.

The sooner that kip slides into the Barrow the better.. eastern europeans feel right at home in that run down kip of a town... pity the by pass has been abandoned, it would have hurried things up a bit.. ross is a dump and always has been.. the town has no soul, no business, Wexford people would gladly let kilkenny claim it... nuff said.

its much worse than that... its the roughest town in Co. Wexford. has the highest unemployment .take the Wexford -Waterford road out of new ross and its a dead town. its a bleak littered dump full of eastern europeans and drugs. the only life in the town is the school kids in the 5 schools..

right so you've obviously got some problem with ross! What you've just described is a general description of irish towns! You will not mis-represent my home like that!!!!!

Right, so its full of Eastern Europeans and Irish bigots and hypocrites then?

Christ, why are the Irish in general so against other people coming here? Do people not realize we also moved for work over the years or to leave **** behind or to get away from the law? Take Poland for instance, parts of it are unbelievably bad for poverty, you really need to read up on it and their history. We moan about what the English did to us, you should read about what the Russians and Germans did to them, **** me it was a nightmare and very recent as well.

If you had a opportunity for a better life and not to be burdened by your countries history before you were born or the opportunity to earn in a week what would take a month at home to earn are you seriously not going to take it? Exactly. Whats wrong with spending five years sharing a two bed apartment with 8 others, if at the end of the five years you've saved enough to build and fully pay for a new house back home? I'd do it. And so what if some of them are bad or exploiting our social welfare or introducing new drugs (heard about injecting the cough medicine one yet?) or paying teenagers to do amatuer porn for websites? The Irish have a mafia in the US and if your parents lived in London during the 70's ask them for a few stories...jesus we were all cowboys then! We like to rob but we don't like being robbed, I think that's a part of the problem as well.

When summer kicks in you wont be complaining about Eastern European women either...as a rule they have fit bodies! You'll all be camping out down at Carnivan to enjoy the view:)

And does anyone every consider the foreign children that are growing up here or possibly reading the tread. How must they feel?

The Irish are currently flooding Sydney and all we're doing out there is getting pissed....I've done it and seen it 1st hand and we are not popular out there at all. I could also name about 30 people I know who have gone to the US to work illegally. Menial jobs and getting pissed as well. Why do the Irish go abroad and turn into aimless pissheads for a year or 10 and then come back? A sure we're havin the craic ain't we?

Yes of course they are the few who are not like this, and im pretty sure ill get a few examples here, but in general i'm right. We should be proud people choose our tiny country for a new life.

Anyway i'll get off my soapbox and get back to my originally question.

I've decided not to come to Ross and are heading off to London instead....to get pissed for a few years! I spent the last week in the town and while it does have some good sports teams (Ross Celtic have won the league 4 in a row, impressive, and a well set up rugby club) and attracive countyside and a good location, the town in the night was dead. People keep telling me to go to Spiders as its good, why? It was empty most nights or only had people in it for matches on the telly. Ma Byrnes? Teenagers and hash from what I saw/smelt. Richie's? That guy looks like a pedophile dressed up as the IRA. Corcorans was good and would be my pick for a local and The Docks had some talent but that was it. The clothes shops are brutel. Its pretty ugly to look at along the Quay and depressive with the closed shops. (it looks like the town was in a recent war and that old chipper needs to be cleaned up or burnt down). The one way systems can take a while to get through for such a small centre. Some nice resturants but noting new or different. Excellent Tescos. Nearest McDonalds 20 miles away!

It just felt like a big huge housing estate or commuter town for Waterford. I got a gut feeling it would take me a long time to make some friends as well. But the biggest nail in the coffin was the look on people faces when I told them I was considering moving here. People were momentarily speechless.

    Thanks for the replies

Enough said eh? i see you concur with my view of ross as a dump that should be forgotten... i never said anything disparaging about eastern europeans
. i just stated that ross is full of them.. its a fact, you can jump to your own conclusions... congrats on not choosing ross.

I lived in Ross from the age of 10 - 18. One of my sisters still lives there. I got the hell out as soon as I was able.
Anyone even thinking of moving there needs a lobotomy.
There are a couple of families in particular that bring down the town. You all know who they are.

My advice to someone thinking of moving to New Ross is to go there on a Friday or Saturday night and see how you feel walking around the town.

I was just there a few weeks ago and I see everybody's favorite whore house is still going strong. I had the pleasure of picking up a mate from next door and some bruiser came out to see what I was doing sitting in the car. I hate parking near that place.

Ive lived in a lot of places but the only place thats even near as bad as New Ross, is Bray.

justwunerin welcome to the wexford forums

This thread is nearly 3 years old. I do think it would be best to start off a new thread asking posters about New Ross. Its been 2 and half years since AARRRRGH has posted here.

New Ross surely has it's issues. It is probably one of the most densely populated areas with regards to both the "Travelling community" and Eastern Europeans(lots of people from other parts of the world also- but they came to work, not cause hassle, which many like to think). "Getting shtabed" is a local inside joke, but it's not that bad. Plenty of youngsters with airmaxes on their feet and doobies in pockets, but they usually hide around.

Town centre is not the greatest, but plenty of things to do. A lot of interesting people to meet, if only you're open. Schools are decent.

Btw, a while ago I've met a girl in Limerick, and it hapopened that she also came from Wexford. When I said I was from New Ross she said that it's a dodgy place. When asked for an elaboration she was not able to answer. Well what do you know..

Overall, people are well used to new comers so meeting people would not be a problem.

I just came across this thead, yep I have a problem with ross. Lived there for three years as a teenager and sweet Hera what is wrong with you people? Small minded, obsessed with never leaving the town, getting up in arms about people voicing their opinions if it goes against your own. That is not misrepresentation Ledger, of the st ledgers I am guessing. Anytime I go back to visit my friend there I see the same people doing the same thing as when we left school, ye do know there is a big world out there beyond the limits of Waterford, another hole.
