Is it true that if you hold an event and take the photographs yourself , that you can't send them to a magazine e.g. Social and Personal or a newspaper unless you are registered as a press photographer?

Has anyone heard of something like this?

I see you're from Waterford and if you got any hassle from a local pro (except me ;) ) I can guess who said it to you and can tell you exactly what to say to him.

    Thanks for all the replies.

I offered to do a shoot for free and was told , "No we always use xxxxx ... she is well known and anyway she is a registered press photographer and the magazine won't accept your shots"

Sounds like my chain was being yanked !

It just sounds like they didn't want to use you. I wouldn't read too much in to it.

Most magazines and newspapers would have a permanent (i.e. employed by them) photographer who gets send out to events etc. and would usually not publish other photographers, especially if it 'just' for social events (i.e. no groundbreaking news which their photographers wasn't able to snap).

Like Paul said, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I'm seeing a small problem here ..... do you not value your work ? ....will you do other jobs for free.

Lots of Social and Personal pages are filled with pics that are paid for by promoters/clubs etc , its possible that you approached it the wrong way.

No - I think I approached it very well. Internal politics and possibly brown envelopes me thinks (favouring to be able to pay friends in the business rather than get it for free internally)

Thanks for all the helpful replies !

    That's a dangerous allegation.

In many areas, they prefer to pay the pro they know, rather than free shots, from someone who may or may not be able to produce a standard image.

I am the photographer from a football club and they won't take free images from people if I cover the games. They pay me for my images. It is because I have a contract with them, and deal with them on a weekly basis.

Many organisations would work like that. Nothing at all to do with politics nor brown envelopes.

Totally agree with Paul - They already work with "x" photographer and appear happy with the photography. They don't know you and a perfectly entitled to tell you that they are not interested in your shots.

You seem frustrated that they don't want your work - turn your frustration into a positive and build up your body of work showing that you can produce quality results on a regular basis.
