I love that about Nolan that its practical effects unless impossible to do without cgi, given so many lazy techniques are used in movies its nice someone does things old school and uses real stunts, the prologue heist is astonishing.

I also feel that his use of really stunts and practical effect can only be beneficial in the long run for cinema. Green screen just seems like such a lazy method to me , invent a way to pull off a special effect rather than simply green screening it.

Exactly, too often now you know you're watching an actor on a greenscreen or cgi stuntman and you dont invest in the scene because you know 99% of it was made on a pc in california somewhere. in TDRK's prologue you see guys absail from a mid flight plane and land on another one, and it looks fantastic because you're watching guys do this for real. same as older movies who didnt have cgi to replace practical stunts or locations, stuff like Mad Max 2 still looks amazing because its real cars and not cgi ones like the Fast and Furious movies use at times, I hate how fake so many movies look these days, location shoots and real stunts ftw.

i dont mind when crap movies use a lot of cgi, they will slowly drive the tech forward until eventually it looks realistic enough

I think the comment about the Silent Era of films was very telling in terms of the production philosophy Nolan & co. have, and ties into your own about the lack of green-screen; they seem to latch onto the idea that the truly classic, epic movies created that tone through actual physicality and scale in their production. Frankly, seeing 1000s of real extras flood the streets of NY is wonderful to watch: say what you want about Nolan, the man has a fairly grand, visual mentality.

well thats true, I'm not anti cgi when its used sparingly and well, I just dont like how lazily its implemented. like cgi blood instead of squibs. I can see why low budget movies do it, saves on production costs, doesnt cause as many continuity problems etc, but movies with massive production budgets could avoid it, it will never match physical squibs.

I don't want to diverge the thread into something else, but in regards to the highlighted text - does it save costs? I do find myself wondering & would love to learn more from those in the industry. IT isn't cheap at the best of times, I sometimes find it hard to believe that incredibly specialist IT staff, with all the high-spec software & hardware required in producing the FX work, is still cheaper than simply hiring a buttload of extras, or hiring 1/2 guys who have a bunch of squibs in their truck.

Doing things without computers isn't necessarily cheaper: in fact, the more people you need on set, the more expensive it potentially is. TDKR has an estimated budget of $250 million, which shows that a film of this scale is expensive no matter what way you do it. Computer artists would likely to be able to cheaply recycle a lot of assets for things like crowd scenes, while an extra (in Hollywood, anyway) always costs money. Still, I much prefer films of this type to be done with the bare minimum of computer graphics. It suits some films that are unable to realised their worlds without extravagant effects - and it's a very tricky balance to maintain - but something like TDK or the tower scene in MI:4 goes to show that the best spectacle is done with a far more grounded sense of scale. CGI is here to stay - and you just have to look at LotR to see how wonderful a tool it can be to enhance a world's scope alongside traditional techniques - but I can only admire the rare influential directors who spend insane money to physically craft their worlds.

Wouldn't mind seeing that, but Dundrum can be difficult to get to on a good day.

It's a stupidly awkward time on a tuesday, morning to mid afternoon instead of late afternoon to evening

Similar to the Aung San Suu Kyi visit, I'd guess the Bat Gear display is a merely a stop after the GP on it's way to somewhere else.

There is also a decent chance that I have tickets for the press preview in Dublin, I'll be happy with that.

Emailed Lighthouse about their 5am screening to see if it was allocated seating
We don’t allocate seats and we are virtually sold out, so I’d advise you to come early if you want guarantee a good seat. We will be opening our doors about 40 minutes before the screening.

    Early rise indeed!

I am not a fan of early mornings, but this just has to be done. Hmm, to get an early night Thurs and hope for some sleep, or do an all nighter...

the track "fear will find you" sounds great, I like what I assume is Catwomans theme as well "Mind if I cut in" I guess its from the scene in the trailer where we see Selina dancing with Bruce wearing a mask.
