best method is trial and error .... hire a studio.... bring along a model/friend ... lighting will already be set up but you can adjust knobs/settings to reduce power.

chances are that studio staff might be willing to assist/offer advice....and a tip in return is usually appreciated ;)

oh and also .... google lighting techniques, learn about lighting positions etc etc.

Just wondered in relation to this does anyone know any good studios that you can rent?

Sometimes it can be good to bring another photographer. 2 photographers and 2 models. That can also split the costs. I'd love to do more studio work, but just don't seem to get around to it.

search flickr for the dublin strobist group, attend one or two of their meet ups, learn.
there are usually 5-6 models + a few make up artists + 10-15 togs
they're a friendly bunch and they are willing to have you ask questions and gawp around at what they're doing, and then review all their posts on the flickr group with the stobist information/set-up listed too!

you may get in on a few studio shoots with some of the guys too :)

The institute of photography do studio courses if its a formal course that you are looking for.

If memory serves me, so do the Dublin Camera Club.

I haven't been on either so i've no specific recommendation.

I went out to look at a studio in Dublin 12 today. It seemed like a lovely. Good space, class gear and above all a really sound lad running the place. And I haven't had many chances to price a load of places but at €20/ hour it seems pretty good value to me!

They also have on their site that they do day studio training courses.

    hi guys,
thanks for the advice so far. I am open to opinions of courses that take place over tyhe course of a few days also or even a designated night a week over a period of a few weeks... also dont mind having to travel.
    thanks again
