I skipped the mid week 7 miles as I felt really lethargic on both 4 milers. Turns out I have a slight cold. However, the enforced mini-taper did a world of good and I came in in 87 mins, 3 mins ahead of my target!:)

Must remember that for half marathon.

    Well done to everyone yesterday!

Me too Michelle:( Thanks, I think originally I went too far in new runners and the recent upped mileage is aggravating it. I'm gonna stay the course for this week and see how the 15 goes next week - dropping the midweek longish run might give them some bit of rest for a few weeks - ideally, taking a few weeks off would sort them (I think) but that ain't possible at the mo.

Have to say that running alone was quite tough after the few runs with company:D

I'm going to try get to meet up this Saturday with you all for our 15 miler:eek:. Mrslow, hope the injury improves with a bit more rest and hopefully we'll see you Saturday:)

Thanks for all the support guys!

Feeling a bit blue if I'm honest as I've never reached a point where I just had to stop and the fact that that point was well below what I'm capable of is a curse.:(

Ever the optimist though - I have been recommended a Physio by one of the main guys in Dunshaughlin AC and am meeting with her tonight, will dress appropriately this time as last time was wearing a suit and a pair of boxers a touch past their best - was just a bit disconcerting:)

I will be running 15 on Saturday, JEmily bring your tow rope:D

I've removed myself from the table - picked up a knee 2 weeks ago which was diagnosed as runners knee and advised that rest was the only real remedy. It's still not right and rather than continue to push it and possibly do some long term damage I'm going to drop out of DCM 2010 ... against better advice I dropped into a program at weeks 5 and have suffered the consequences

The new running aim is Connemarathon 2011

Best of luck everyone and I wish you all the best for October

Mrslow - hope you get some good news tonight from the physio.

Mitresize5 - sorry that you've had to bow out of DCM, rest up, and safe training for Connemarathon 2011.

Man I'm sorry to hear that, it must be heartbreaking to have to drop out.

If it's any help to you I wanted to do the 2009 DCM and jumped into a programme quite late last year. 3 weeks in my body wasn't used to the sudden jump in heavy milage and I decided to drop out for fear of an injury.
(Yuck Alert - Did lose 2 toe-nails though)

A year later I find myself in a much better situation regarding training and preparation. Dropping out last year was a good thing for me and I'm sure you'll find the same for yourself in a year's time.

Sorry to hear that but sounds like a smart move. No point in wrecking your body for a marathon. When you're in top shape it will be so much more enjoyable :) Good luck.

Very sorry to hear that. Best to look after yourself and get the injuries sorted though, there are always more marathons but you only have one pair of knees. Connemara looks like a really good race anyway, and I hope the training goes well for you.

Don't be afraid to pop back in here from time to time and offer a bit of encouragement too :)

I just came accross this thread, is it too late to join the gang? :)

Have you raced before? If so what are your PBs? (Date and distance please!)
The only proper race I've done was the Ballycotton 10 about 3 years ago.
I hadn't ran before that so I started training with a group, I did 79' 44" and I was pretty chuffed.
Don't think I've done an 8 min mile since though

Do you still need to take walk breaks in your training?

    Nope

How much training do you currently do? Distances, how many days a week, cross training - whatever you think is relevant

before I started training for this marathon I just ran casually, maybe once a week for about 7 miles.

What do you want to achieve? Dream finishing time and realistic finishing time?
Dream time would be under 4 hours, realistic is hopefully 4.30

How many days a week can you train?
    3/4

Why are you running this marathon?
It was something I always wanted to do.

I have been kinda following a plan from the Dubmin marathon website but I wasn't fully confident in it as the longest run it had was 18 miles so I decided to plan out the last 9 weeks properly, that was when I saw this thread.

I miscalculated the weeks when I started training for the marathon so I'm actually a week ahead of where I need to be :o
I did 15 at the weekend @ 9' 24" pace so I was pretty happy with that.
I got a pain in the back of my knee after 14 miles and its still sore today, its the first run I've been sore afer (as opposed to stiff).
I had done a couple of 13s over the last few weeks.
My biggest problem is that I've missed out on most of my weekday runs for the last 2 weeks due to work.
Before the last 2 weeks I was getting in 2 or 3 6 mile runs during the week.
I plan to give my knee a couple of days rest and then try to get back into my weekday runs.

And hopefully I'll be there sub 4.30 with the rest of ye in Dublin :D

Folks, i have dipped into this since i met up with Mr slow (hope the physio gives you good news), Ray Cun and the Wexican last weekend for a long run.

Fair play to ye all for taking up the challenge of the marathon. I'm only running since '08 but alot of what i read on here is the same when i was starting out and for anyone who has ever run because everyone had to start at some point.

Injuries, doubts and fears are what every level of runner who posts on here and who you meet on your runs have to deal with so don't let it get ye down.

From injury can come a bonus. I was training for Edinburgh in May this year when 10 days out i pulled ny calf while walking in my house. Distraught is not the word for how i felt but since then i've destroyed my pb for 10k and 10 miles so all the training will be worth it.

And remember, when you cross the line with your goal achieved, be it time or distance done, no one can take it away from you and the sense of achievement is worth all the miles of pounding the road, the sweat, the pain, the agony and the despair you felt during all the training. I know this to be true as i finished Cork '09 with a torned calf in one leg and cramp in other so i couldn't walk but i did it.

Don't give up folks, keep the faith and good luck with the training

not my best week :o I just felt really really tired all week. Whether that was down to the 13 miler last weekend or a lot of travelling this week I don't know.. maybe a combination. I'm in mini taper mode for the HM next Sunday so hopefully I'll be back on track then. Nerves are kicking in!
