I have my last 20 mile run on the 2nd of October, and I suppose it's all tapering from there.
    The next week is 5, 4, 5, and 14
    Then 4, 3, 4, and 8
Finally 3, 2, 2 and 2 the day before the marathon

I hadn't noticed that 5, 4, 5 before... I really am going to go crazy next month!

Towards the end of this there'll be loads of love and thanks for Rainbow Kirby so I just wanted to jump in early and say Thank You. My offer stands that if I can walk from the finish line to the pub your first drink is on me!

MCS - do you want to head up the 5 hour pace group?

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 20,366 Mod ✭✭✭✭RacoonQueen

As long as it's nothing much more than that really then it's fine. It may help to settle your nerves.

That said, I spent the day before DCM last year on my couch watching Man U lose to Liverpool. That probably wasn't the best thing to do to relax...

That's what I did too. Gave me a good laugh! :pac:

I see a lot of you are following the 2hr pace group for the half. Myself and Racoon Queen (above) will be the official pacers for that group, we will be wearing pacers uniform and carring 2hr Ballons. make sure to come up and say hello on the day (some of you will know me from the LSR in the park the other week).

Also we will be going to Ryans in Park Gate Street with loads of boardsies for a few drinks afterwards, if you all want to join!!

Is the criteria for pacing that you can do it comfortably? In that case break out the sedan chair for me :D:D

    Hey Guys,

Great thread! I'm currently training for my first DCM and I'm following Hal Higdon's Novice 2 programme which has been going well to date. I have a couple of issues which you may be able to help with:

    (1) I did a 19 mile LSR on Saturday morning (was meant to be 18) and 17 miles the week before as per the programme. However, I'm signed up for the Dublin Half in 2 weeks which coincides with what should be a 19 mile LSR. Thinking of doing that 19 miler this weekend instead of the 12 on the plan. What are peoples thoughts on 3 long LSRs on 3 consecutive weekends like this? The week after the half I'll be on hols so don't think I'll be able to do the 19 then. Any LSR there will be a bonus!

So am thinking of adjusting to:

    11/9 - 19 Miles
    18/9 - Half
    25/9ish - 12 Miles
    2/9 - 20 Miles
    Taper time!

    Does this look ok?

    (2) Also, I can't figure out what my marathon pace should be. I initially just wanted to finish within a reasonable time (preferably 4:30 or under) but I'm reevaluating given that my training has gone better than expected. Under regular race conditions it's normal to expect that one can manage a better time than they've managed in training, but given the fact that I'll have never run more than 20 miles I'm not sure if this rule will apply on Oct 25th.

My LSR pace has been at around 5:25km pace which would translate to a 3:48 marathon. Is it reasonable to aim for this time or should I be going after a faster time (given the race conditions) or slower (given the fact that I've never run this distance). The whole unknown of the last 6.2 miles has left me guessing somewhat. I also promised myself that I wouldn't obsess about the time, but I can't ignore the issue anymore.

Actually given the day thats in it..

What is the best gear to have if it rains on the day?

  • Registered Users Posts: 15,704 ✭✭✭✭RayCun

If it was me, I'd do a shorter LSR this weekend, so I could race the half-marathon, and use it to judge my marathon pace. If you run with the 1.50 pace group you'll have a better idea whether you're capable of sub4 or not. (If you find it really easy you could even consider going for 3.45.)
At this stage, I reckon finding the pace to run at is more important than checking off a 19 mile LSR, especially since you've done one already.

  • Registered Users Posts: 26,928 ✭✭✭✭rainbow kirby

In answer to (1) I would have a slight concern in terms of doing 3 hard LSRs on 3 consecutive weeks. You've done 19 already, maybe consider doing 15-17 this week and follow the rest as you've stated? You're going to get the 20 in anyway later on. That said - see how things go this week, and on your LSR listen hard to what your body is saying. If it's feeling the strain I'd call it at 15, if you're feeling good go to 17.

And for (2), I think 4 hours would be a good base target, with 3:45-3:50 as your "inner child" goal. How do you feel running at 5.25/km pace? How have you felt at the end of your LSRs at this pace?

Don't worry about not having run more than 20 miles at once. Your training has prepared you well for the last 6.2 miles whether you believe it or not. Trust your plan, keep the head up and enjoy it. :)

Have you managed to avoid running in the rain yet?!
I wore my normal gear on Saturday, will do it again on the day. If its raining, I'll bring a black bag, hat, maybe even old runners and socks to wear while waiting for the start.

Unless it's really cold, just wear your normal gear. Bring a binbag for the start that you can rip off once you get going, just to stop the rain from soaking you while you wait to start, also bring a cheap Penneys hat and gloves that you can dump along the way.

Found the end of the 16.5 LSR very tough. For the last 2-3 miles I felt like I was running on empty. Don't think I had eaten enough on the Friday. Legs felt ok though, so that's something at least.
