Got soaked between miles 5 and 7 on the LSR. Towards the end of the run I felt a bit of chaffing. First time I've ever had this, not cool. Time to break the vaseline out for the rest of the runs from here on in.

I've noticed that I seem to take about 3 days to recover fully from LSR. Also, in ten mile race last month I missed long-ish midweek run, but it helped me have a good race. So this week I'll be limiting week runs to just the 5 milers! :D

LSR should be about 90 secs slower than your PMP, take it easy and most of all slowly.;)

    1. I had presumed the pace the marathon would be run at would be the pace of your LSR. But actually it's the pace you do a handy 4 miles at, sustained over 26 miles? and not the much slower pace that is difficult enough to finish a mere 16 miles in?

    2. Is the aim to do every mile in the same time? for thosing aiming for a 4h30 finish, which is an average pace of 10 mins 18 secs per mile - would you be going out and finishing the first mile in 10mins 18s?

    1. For first-timers, PMP is probably going to be relatively close to your LSR pace, but possibly a little faster to account for the effects that taper will have. Start easy and comfortable.

    2. You should be aiming for 10.19/mile as a guideline for a 4:30 finish, but that's not an absolute. Certain miles will be slower and others will be faster, depending on where you are on the course. It's difficult to restrain your pace at the start because you'll have loads of energy.

    1. Your LSR should be done at a slower pace, a slower pace than you would normally run. You're building up time on your feet, teaching your body to burn fat. If you do your LSRs too fast, you take too long to recover and the rest of your training during the week will suffer.

How fast are you running your LSRs? What is your planned marathon pace? What are you basing that on?

    2. Yes, you should be trying to do every mile the same. There'll be a bit of variation because of crowds, hills, the boost from gels, whatever, but every 5k should be the same, and the first half and last half should be the same.

LSRs: are generally around 11min 40 though 12 mile last week was 11min average. There used to be great divergence between time of first and last mile but more even now.

    pmp: 5hour finish (11min 27 per mile)

based on: Rainbow told me so (!)

See if you can run your LSR a little slower, but keep the pace consistent all through the run. Rather than starting at 11.30 per mile and finishing at 12.30, do 12 all the way around. Don't worry about the fact that you're running slower than marathon pace - remember that the marathon is your peak effort.

On a typical weekend LSR, you're coming off a week's hard training, and you're going to be doing another week's training afterwards. It's just one more session in your plan.

With the marathon, you're building up to it over a few months, you have two weeks taper before it, and you have a few weeks off after it. You'll be fitter then than at any point in your training, and you'll be pushing yourself harder than you ever do on a training run. Yes, you'll be running longer and faster, but you'll be able for it.

I can't put my finger on it but I have been feeling a little off this past week. My times are slower, pace appears to be off and the runs are more of a struggle.
I hope it's just a bad week and not that I have reached my peak... this saturday will tell...

I know a lot of people including myself who are feeling a bit washed out, it's not the training it's something in the air. Good nights sleep and lots of Vit C ;)

MrSlow or Raycun - one of you I think (or maybe it was someone else) mentioned a brand of plasters to prevent bloody nipples - can you tell me again please? Cheers...

It was Ray and I can't remember what it was. Sorry.

Micropore tape? It's not a brand of plasters, it's the tape you use to tape up bandages. Looks like white, semi-opaque sellotape, not as sticky as a plaster but has always stayed on for the length of my run. You'll get it in any chemist.

did 7 miles last night and I've a twinge above my left knee - its a bit swore today so have booked physio for sat morning.

Also invested in a water belt today.

Question actually.... Good place to get a running belt? Got a cheap on but its not good.... Ran the 16 miler I did with no gels/iso drinks and only a small amt of water.

There's plenty of places online - Amazon, Wiggle, sub4.ie. Or a proper sports shop (not Champion etc) if you want to try one on.
