    Hi guys
First post!! Doing my first DCM this year and now reading all these posts beginning to get a bit nervous!!! Have been following the training plan on the DCM website as i only found the higdon plan last week (really wish had found it sooner) so at this post am only at 16 miles for the longest run, have been following the 4.15 to 5 hour plan. Done the half at the weekend in 2 hours on the button which was the time i aimed for and was quite happy with that but now feeling like this training plan has my totally unprepared at this point as everyone seems to have nailed down an 18 mile and heading for 20!

Hi Maggie and welcome, I didn't 'nail down' 18 I ground to a halt at 17.55:( I'm sure your plan has a solid base behind it so don't panic, If you're based in Dublin get yourself down to the Phoenix Park for your LSR on Saturday morning 9am at the Knockmaroon Gate, we have a group of at least 5/6 every week (20+ one particular week) and you can run as far as you want (we generally have a good range of targets) plus some more experienced runners can give you a free bit of advice. Pace is 10 min miles.:D

Well done on the half. :)

You should probably be looking to do 18 miles this weekend anyway. Looking at the schedule you've followed so far, you'd probably be ok to go to 20 the week after too (and psychologically it helps to do 20, just for the "I've already done 20" factor). If you're around Dublin, there will be a few people doing their LSR together in the Phoenix Park on Saturday morning at 9 so you could join in with that if it suits you.

(pre-empted by mrslow, who should probably look at renaming himself :pac: )

hopefully i'll be ok just nerves now i think!!! won't mind getting in for a couple of runs in the park before, normally just run on my own which is a bit boring to say the least.

I tried that earlier on but was told NO as a lot of people thought I was Mrs. Low, understandably I suppose given what a delicate little flower I am.

    Hey all,

Completed the half on Saturday in a time of 1:46. This was the furthest that I have run but I was wondering do you think that the full in October is a stretch too far? I felt comfortable up to the 10/11 mile mark and it did seem to takes its toll from there, i dont know whether this was because of the hills or that I am not used to the distance but it is probably a combination of both. I finished strong (last 1K) and felt comfortable after the race too but when I think that the full contains another 13.1 miles I start laughing and tell myself its too far but in your opinions what would your verdict be?

    Much appreciated

a friend of mine did the marathon last year and the most he'd run before that was the Dublin half the month before. ran 8 miles 3-4 times a week for 6/7 years. ran the half in 1 hour 20 and then the marathon in 3 hours. no training plan, no gels, bought new runners worn the first time in the marathon....all the stuff you're not meant to do. it's possible is all i'm saying!

Hola Guys! Well done to everyone who completed the half!

I was in sunny Spain for a fortnight, managed to get 9 runs out of 14 days so delighted with myself. Myself and hubs had to make sure we were got out early each morning as by 10am it was 27 degrees
Got 6m done each morning-not great for time on the road but it was the best I could manage.

Planning on 15m this week....its getting close guys!!

I'll be going into the big one cold at this stage as I won't be able to fit any race in between now and then.

    I'll aim for the 4, but realistically I'm now thinking 4.05 - 4.10

    Hey all,

I got an email a little earlier to say that 53 Degrees North is hosting a Marathon Running Clinic in the Carrickmines branch at 7 tomorrow evening. There's a running coach, an Asics technical rep and a Nutritionist...It's aimed at beginners, intermediates, advanced and elites......

Hello everyone..... I'm a newbie too and like maggiemissy, very nervous after reading the posts. I've been following the Higdon plan for novices and was meant to do 18 at the weekend but had to come home after 16 as I had run out of time but did it in 2.35hrs. Thing is, as I'm heading into 18 - 20 miles the legs are getting tired, and I've been having hot baths after the long run, should they be ice ones instead to speed up recovery.I have also been running on my own and its tough country roads with lots of cattle urging me on, I'm hoping on the day the momentum and the company of others will help and I won't get as tired...... (fooling myself maybe?)

sadiemac, it's normal to be quite tired, especially your first time at the longer distance.
Are you taking any nutrition on your run? Gels, jellies, or energy drinks? What are you eating before your run?
How fast are you running these longer runs? You should be running 30-60 seconds per mile slower than you plan to run the marathon - if you do all your long runs at marathon pace you'll exhaust yourself.

Hi RayCun, I just have a light cereal or tea and toast before a long run. Then a litre of water before the run, one during it and one Maxifuel gel during the 16 miles. Do you think thats the problem, not enough grub?
I have a Garmin watch and my pace hovers around 9.30.
Thanks a million for any advice!

Delighted with the half marathon and wondering should I reassess my DCM goal time. Is there 4.15 pacers?

Despite what you might think right now, you *will* get through this, and you *will* be fine. The taper will fix up a lot of things, these are the peak weeks of the program now so it's very normal for you to be really tired and thinking a bit negatively. Take it slow on the 18 miler this weekend, remember the point of the exercise is time on your feet.
