Unfortunately I have paid the price for the effort with a head cold which was coming on for a few days. Hopefully it wont last too long.

As I am also going for a 4.20 pace, I would be up for grouping with others also going for the same time.

I was just about able to reschedule my work on Saturday so that I could work in the afternoon after the run so I was delighted to get the race in. The only problem with the half is that I am finding it hard to work my training schedule around it.

I still haven't got my 18 mile Lsr in, so I am going to chance it tomorrow, That will give me 10 days to recover before my 20 mile lrs and then I'll taper. If my legs aren't up for it, I'm only going to have 1 weeks taper so here is hoping.

Still trying to decide myself whether I'll do it - would like to do 18 miles this weekend though and can't really fit in a 5k around that. It's a great race though - one of the better 5ks around.

Good luck to Mrs Slow in it too :)

I've only got 12 (or is it 13) to do on Saturday...Guess I could do that on Friday and run the 5k on the Sunday....

I'd certainly try to pace a few early miles as well.

Come on people, lets get our own 4:15 pace group going!

Help anyone, sore toenails for a while now, had them covered in nail polish in case I might see anything I didn't want to (as you do) , just took polish off and FOUR black toes, please tell me I won't lose the nails (that includes the two big ones) is there anything I can do to stop them falling off and if there isn't, will I still be able to run next month. Distraught. oh and very sore as well.....

  • Registered Users Posts: 93 ✭✭nachoqueen

Are going to stay black , if they don't fall off :( . In time u will see them as a badge of honour

    A Possible TMI Post

Sadiemac - I know how you feel, I got a bit freaked out recently, when I discovered I had two black nails, but I did a *diy job on them, and now one is fully back to normal, and the second one is it's way back :D I made 3 pin pricks in each nail, to let the bad blood out. Apologies for anyone who is now feeling nauseous after reading that - but you gotta do ....

*This doesn't count as medical advice ;)

Well done to everyone on their great times at the weekend. Although not setting a target time myself finished in 2:03:35. Felt good throughout apart from the last mile or so.

Started to feel a nagging pain in my left hip for the last bit. Not enough to stop running but felt something there. Pain went half way down the side of my leg. Was fine after the race and the next day but felt it again towards the end of my 6 mile run last night.

    Any ideas?

Also have noticed if I stop for a drink during a lsr when I take off again I can feel a stiffness, shooting pain in the middle of my buttocks :D for about 100 metres until I get going again properly. Very strange.

Might be an idea to see a physio, to put your mind at rest. It sounds to me you might need a few specific stretches and they'll be best placed to tell you which ones.:D

So two questions to throw at you folks...
    1) does anyone know if its going to be on the telly - i think I remember Setanta doing something last year...? when and why did RTE stop showing it?
    2) Does anyone know if there'll be water bottles or those crappy cups? - I seem to remember somone saying it was bottles last year

    thats 3 questions isn't it.... :)

Really was in two minds about this coming up to Half. Based on my time McMillan has me at 4:07 but very mindful of all of the discussion over the last few days - I really want to enjoy this experience so may even head out with the 4:30 group - or may be interested in the 4:15 group thats developing here... ok that means I'm still in two minds... bu**er! ;)

Hi all - New to this, so I have a few questions.

What is a LSR? I see it all the time here...
How do you know where the pacers are and what pace they are doing?
I would like to complete the Marathon in between 4.15 to 4.45 so would like to get in the right group otherwise I'll hit the start too fast and burn out.
I started running on the 6th August 2010 and put in 35 miles before the 21st August running the Frank Duffy 10 miles. I did it 1hr.29m, but pulled a musle after 9 miles, so I had a slow enough finish. I was quite pleased with that.
I then put in 22 miles between the 2nd Sept and the 12th before running the half marathon on Saturday. I did it in 1hrs.47m.45sec and felt okay afterwards apart from my shins until Monday. I could have gone a bit quicker but didn't want to pull a muscle or fad away.
If I do a 20 miler this saturday on a slow pace 10mins per mile and then I'm going to Spain for 6 days at the end of the month and will run at least 6 miles every day.. and then an 18 miler two weeks before the Marathon, do you think I can complete the marathon? Is it advisable even to run the marathon?
I see people mentioning running in the park saturday at 9'oclock, can I join in for the 20 miler and where do people meet?
    Cheers,
    S

If you only started running on the 6th of August 2010 forget about doing a marathon in 2010.

I'm quite fit in general.. Would it be mainly due to injury or just not a possible goal to achieve?

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,554 ✭✭✭Mr Slow

You're times are unbelievable given your small running base.

I think you already know what you're going to do you're just waiting for someone to tell you it's ok.

All are welcome for the LSR's but if you injure yourself by doing too much too soon it wouldn't be fair to expect someone else to sacrifice their Long Slow Run to see you back to your car.

    Good Luck.

Is the longest run you've done so far 13.1 miles?
You've picked up injuries in both the races you've done so far. You just won't have the endurance base to finish comfortably and without the risk of serious injury. Running 13.1 miles is a whole different world to running twice that.

  • Registered Users Posts: 26,928 ✭✭✭✭rainbow kirby

I agree with everything RQ has said here.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13 seamusm99

I only injured my self in the first race, but that is because I got there late and didn't warm up properly and because it was my first race I got taken away with all atmosphere. The only bit of sorness on the half marathon was my shins, but wasn't too bad it was gone by Monday. I ran 3 miles on the Sunday after the race no problem in 25mins, so the shins weren't a major problem.
I think you're 100% right in that another 13.1 miles is a different ball game, hence why I want to get a 18-20 miler in to see if I have the endurance base. I reckon if I can do a 18-20 miler at a slow pace without breaking down I might (Just might) be able to struggle through full race on the day. I'm probably deluding myself but you have to set goals.

Going from 13 - 18/20 in one go is risky enough on it's own. You're just asking for a serious injury. Judging by your posts you've already made your mind up and it doesn't matter what we say.

However, 26.2 miles is a LONG way to travel on foot. Respect the distance, it is NOT easy, by any means. 99% of the people who will be taking part in the marathon will have been doing specific training for about 6 months, at least.

I did my first marathon with 5 months of random training where I didn't have a clue what I was doing, at any point. My longest pre-marathon run was 16 miles. I got lucky when I didn't pick up a serious injury(I still got injured, on 16 miles, funnily enough  ) and I already had a decent endurance base before I started running.

Don't do it. There must be around 10 marathons in Ireland now, do one in 2011 instead. It is just not worth the risk.
