If anyone is still a week ahead at this stage of the program, keep the midweek mileage but I'd like you to do 15-17 miles as your long run - see how you feel after 15, but I wouldn't go much further than 17. You've probably already done the 20 if you're a week ahead.

I was planning on doing another 20m this weekend, I have gotten 2 in already but now I'm not sure..........
    Any advice?

I've done 2 already (3 and 5 weeks ago, I think), planning another 20 on Saturday.

    It's up to yourself really.

You don't absolutely *need* another 20 - having 2 done already (and probably a few runs in the 15-19 mile range) has prepared you well. If you feel though that it would be good for you mentally, and you have no injury problems or worries, then feel free to do it - just know that at this stage with the work you have done you should be fine anyway.

Just wondering, what you will use to carry supplies on the day?

I bought a running pouch online, and planned to use it on Saturday (2 gels, some glucose sweets, jellies, and tissue). I got 20 metres up the road, when I had to turn back, as it was just too awkward (bouncing up and down, and heavy) and take it off. I tried pinning the gels to my shorts, but that didn't work either :o

So in the end, I headed out with an MP3 arm holder, that barely fitted 1 gel, a couple of sweets and a tissue - this wouldn't do me for the marathon, I'd need to have about 3 gels.

Any suggestions on what to go for?

What do you plan on carrying on the day?

All I'll be carrying is my gels - everything else goes in my drop bag. I've just got a race number belt with loops for 4 gels, and I'll probably throw an extra one in my shorts pocket.

    Thanks rk :)

I'll have a google for one of those.

It's basically this - got it in Irishfit for a tenner even though I could have got it cheaper online. Silly kirby. Wore it for the half, with 2 gels in it (only used one), and it really didn't bother me at all.

What you doing for water/drinks, grabbing bottles en route as such? I've got pouch for gels, tissue etc. But i'll need plan for water as nothing but handheld bottle to start. I presume there will be plenty of water stations, and it won't be cups but bottles given out???

Damn short nights are affecting the runs now. Finished the LSR in the dark at 8Pm on Saturday night.

Water stations are every 3 miles, giving out bottles.

I've an arm pouch that suits me, will hold three gels (not the isotonic ones) and I'll stick another in my back pocket.

I'm going native. Hunting for nuts and berries in any shrubbery along the route. Water stations every 5K. Bottles, I believe.

You could probably survive on all the gels people will drop along the way.

There are 11 water stations on the course, just grab a bottle (it *is* bottles, not cups) at each one. I don't really see any need to have a bottle with me from the start.

did the marathon 2 years ago it hurt a lot and took over 5 hours
since then have done a lot of cyclng and lost 7kg
recently did the half marathon with a friend, it took 2.5hours but felt fine at the end (waiting for friend held me back)

am questionning now should i go for full marathon, would be happy with under 5 hours and to use a run/walk strategy

have i left it too late to prepare????

Seriously - yes. Far too late to be thinking about DCM now if your longest training run this year has been 13 miles. Marathon is 4 weeks away now, most people will be starting to taper this time next week. Train for a spring marathon instead.

You could always ask a helpful motorcycle Guardette to carry them in her leathers for you.... ;)

Seriously though.. how many gels should you consume during a marathon. The reason I ask is because on High 5 gels it recommends using three sachets for every hour of activity with a max of 40 per day. Seems like an awful lot ?

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,357 ✭✭✭RubyK

For my last LSR of 20 miles, I took 2 gels and about 5 jellies. On marathon day, I'd like to have 4 gels on me, plus jellies on the day. They do have 2 gel stations on route (hi5), but I found the the isotonic ones suit me best, so I'll stick with my own on the day.

This is trial and error, to be done on your LSRs. Some people use 1 or 2, while my normal is every 3 miles from mile 9 = 6 total.

For some people this would be way too much gunk to stomach, but at this stage, I'm used to it.

Also, if you have room, a packet of jellies wouldn't go to waste - a life saver in the last few miles (although there are plently of Good Samaritans along the route who hand these out...).

  • Registered Users Posts: 706 ✭✭✭the boss of me

One every three miles seems more like it alright. I took two in the half and that worked out well. I'd imagine three an hour would rip the stomach out of most people.

    You could try this belt

Bit of advice required (hope to do 1st ever marathon DCM)
I have been building up my running since Jan last (2010)
Done two nice 10k's (42-45mins) one half marathon (1hr 42m) and was up to about 16 mile on my longer runs- on average I was up to about 28 mile a week, so I had a good degree of fitness .... I started to get niggles last June - calf and then IT Band/Knee issue, both injuries have interuppted my training schedule
I'm only really back -I did two 5 milers and one 10miler last week- not pushing it and suffered no reaction of note - now realising that I must actually get at least one 20miler in ...... could anyone recommend a sensible schedule over the next couple of weeks .....that would leave me in some sort of shape for the big one ... any advice very welcome

I think the gap in training is too big and you're out of time to get the mileage into your legs you require, go for a spring marathon instead.
