I ended up walking the 2nd half of my long run which I now appreciate as it gave me a kick in the arse and reminded me that these next few weeks will be hard.

I also picked my number up for the 5mile race on the 17th July, am I right to assume that everyone else is doing this?

You can be slightly more susceptible to colds and viruses when training, because you are putting more stress on your body than you were before. Just look after yourself and you shouldn't notice too much of a difference in general though.

Most important thing to do now though is to make sure that you are properly recovered. For that reason I would suggest that you stick with the step-back week this week, but if after 5 miles this weekend you feel you would be comfortable with going on for another two then go ahead.

Thanks, RK. I'll stick with step-back and will see how I feel on LSR as you suggest.

Looking forward to for 5 miler on 17th now!:)

I think a lot of us are, most of the Dublin-based people anyway?

The Macmillan running calculator is down at the moment, but it says that a 5 mile time of 40.47 is equivalent to a (barely) sub-4 marathon. Assuming you do all the training, of course.

For a 4.30 marathon, you should be doing under 44 minutes in the 5 mile, I think.

So now you have targets :)

I will be anyway - even if my own training has been absolutely rubbish lately! Hoping for sub-40.

Found Saturday and Sunday's runs really hard - had a few glasses of wine over the weekend, think I will have to have a serious talk with myself re: alcohol and running...its too difficult to run with a bottle of wine!!

    So two questions really.
    1) Are you more or less suseciptble to cold & viruses when training?
    and
    2) I'm on week 3 which is a step back week. However, I'm thinking at this stage and the fact that I didn't do an LSR this past week, that I should do the 7 mile LSR this weekend rather than the 5 that I should do.

    Any views?

Yes I find that I get lots of flu / colds when training hard - prob best to keep stocked up on vitamins etc!

If I were you i'd chance the 7mile run or maybe go halfway and do a 10km / 6miler? Whatever feels comfortable on the day.

Me too.....Did 38:13 last year so the plan is to run 7:30/miles which will give me 37:30...That said, have done no work near that pace until today (3 x 7:45)...Will do all my 3 mile runs at that pace or quicker between now and the race and hope that's enough:confused:

Quick question, the LSR is 5 miles this week and next week is 9 miles. Next week will clash with the Adidas 5 mile. Should I switch the 2 LSR's or try for the 5 miles on the Saturday, and 9 miles on the Sunday. Cheers

I was quite happy with the week though I realised I have been taking the mid week run too easy. I felt great after my lsr. I also did a wall climbing course so it has been an active and fun week. I really need to concentrate on getting good nutrition and cut down on the chocolate!

Quick question, the LSR is 5 miles this week and next week is 9 miles. Next week will clash with the Adidas 5 mile. Should I switch the 2 LSR's or try for the 5 miles on the Saturday, and 9 miles on the Sunday. Cheers

You'd be wrecked if you did that, racing will really take it out of you.
How are you finding the LSRs so far? Do you really feel you need the step-back week?
You could swap the runs, 9 this week and 5 the next. (Or 7 this week)
Or you could run next week's 5 at LSR pace, and do an extra 4 before or after the race.

I'm going to drop that weekend's LSR completely. The race will take as much effort as an LSR (probably more), so I'm not worried about breaking the build-up of miles.

I won't be doing the 5m race in the Park on Sat week (I'm going on holidays that day), but good luck to all here who are doing it.

guys, I'm looking for advice on how to hydrate on an lsr. I have a 9 miler this week and should start taking water onboard during these longer runs especially in this weather.

My question is how do people do this? - sounds like a silly question I know!

Personally I hate carrying anything on a run so don't want to have to carry a bottle. I could carry money and stop at a shop but I think that might be a bad idea for me to break my rhythm...I find it hard to start again once I stop!! Any other ideas? Tks...

Personally on anything under 10 miles i don't need to hydrate, i hydrate well before i go out and that does me.

But if your route is planned you can stash a bottle along the route and get it as you run. I have one of the oval ones with a hole in the middle to carry that i'd use on say a 12 or 13 miler it holds about 400/500 ml so not too big and it just gets lighter as you lose it so by the end it will be empty.

Its about adapting as you build your mileage and listening to what your body tells you.

What I do for hydration on LSRs really depends from run to run. I have a belt that takes 4 200ml bottles, I'll take that on the longest LSRs or for 10+ miles if the weather is very hot. Otherwise, because I'm never really more than a mile or two from shops, I'll just zip a €2 coin into my shorts pocket and nip in for a bottle of water or Lucozade Sport. If you drive and are running laps in a park, for example, you could leave bottles of water in your car and pick them up from there as needed.

cheers for the advice. I guess that's the purpose of these lsr's so you can find what works for you. Right now my lsr's are out and back but think I will change the routes so I can circle back to car for longer ones.

I prob will have to end up carrying some money in the poca and stopping off a shop. I did think about stashing bottles but then had this thought of a dog stopping off for a tinkle on the bottle and that put me off completely!!

I run in the middle of nowhere so thats not an option for me, but just put the stashed bottle in a small plastic bag and it will be safe.

Oh and change up your routes as the same one all the time and drive ( or run:D) you around the bend !

lol, thanks for the tip on the plastic bag - common sense but I never thought of it :o

Yeah I'm already sick of the routes I use so will def be changing them up - plus one is really flat so I'm just being too kind to myself there!

So that’s my contingency week gone already – bugger! In fairness I have had a perfect storm of other commitments taking over recently and just could not get the time. BUT I did go for my 7 mile LSR today. It felt good and gave me the opportunity to have a good long think about everything. I am going to do my damnedest to make the time to do this. If that doesn’t work then it’s just not meant to be for me right now and I’ll have to revisit my marathon ambitions another time.

Won’t give up without a fight though :)

I’m now on week 3. Let’s start again!!

The fact that you got your LSR in and felt good is a very positive thing, it shows that your training to date is pretty solid. Stick with it as best you can, but don't sweat it if you miss a few runs here and there due to life interfering! The plan is a suggested plan, not an absolute.

It's important to make sure you're copying the latest table, otherwise people spend half their time adding themselves back in...

Thanks RK - hadn't thought of it that way

Re: skipping runs - yes I did consider doing my four runs this week on thurs/fri/sat & sun to allow me to catch up (haven't ruled it out either) but that would prob be a bit much and as you say no sweat to miss one or two here and there... lets see what happens

If you miss a session you miss a session in my mind. I don't try to do more the next week as this can be counter productive in the long run ( pardon the pun )

I will only run 3 times a week on average as my achilles aren't the best and trying to do more will just lead to swelling and time of so i know what my own body can take after 8 months of running. Also doing session 2 days in a row doesn't do me any good either.

Being consistant is the main thing, run every week and the important thing is your LSR which you will see building as the weeks and months go on.

Your training during the week is to build your fitness for the LSR at the weekend.

Did 4 miles today with middle 2 @ PMP. Since I've never went PMP before I decided to go out slow and then do the two middle at a pace I felt comfortable at and then fall back for the last mile.

    Splits below.

    1. 10:13
    2. 9:03
    3. 9:02
    4. 10:04

Happy with this and may consider to attempt Sub 4:15 but know it's early days and the miles are low to date.

I did my longest LSR since starting my training programme, it was 10m and I was happy enough delighted with it :), I found the last mile really hard but I was amazed at how good I felt afterwards. I think the base training that I have been doing for the past 4 weeks is starting to pay off!
I suppose I just want to encourage everyone and to remind us all that all our hard work is going to be worth it;)

Well done and that step up into double digits is a great feeling !

From now on you'l really have to look at hydration during your LSR and taking in fluids while you run.

I hope to do 10 this weekend.

I did 5.5 yesterday in 50 min 3 days after my 1st half marathon so that was as good for me as the 10 were for you !!! One of the best runs i;ve done in a long time.

Thanks elvis jones, I'm not keen on running with a bottle of water so I will have to start bringing money with me to duck into a shop. I def felt a difference with hydration so it will just be a matter if being organised

You must have been walking on air yesterday after your run, fair play to you. How did you find the half marathon?

I know this is a bit vague as it all depends on weight/distance/speed but how much water should I take after a run? I drank loads throughout the day before a 8m run last night and then drank about 3 or 4 pints of water afterwards when I got home but I was up half the night going to the loo! I'm wrecked tired this morning:(

It varys from person to person.... I generally would drink 2 to 3 liters during the day and then stop about an hour before a run. Wouldnt bring water with me unless its more than 8mile and then about a liter after my runs. (gen run in the evenings). some tips here from run republic

Everybody is different so you will need to experiment to find what amount is right for you. That being said, it is generally recommended to drink at least 2 litres a day. But I only drink when I'm thirsty and 2 glasses before a run. A good indication of proper hydration is when the urine is a clear colour.

Missed my run this evening. Should have done 3 miles but I got drenched coming home from work on the bike and there was no going out again. I might do it tomorrow, or I might just let it go. Will have to be early tomorrow, with the Dubs ouble-header in Croker. Can't be missing that.

Took out the people who didn't update last week - but put yourself back in if you're still going...
