Masuda Method of Hatching Shinys

The Masuda method, or Masuda's method, is a fan-made term for describing an easier way of obtaining shiny Pokémon in Generation IV. It is named after Game Freak director Junichi Masuda, who first documented the effect in his column.[1] In the column, Masuda mentioned a way for "rare colored Pokemon's Egg [to] be found little easier", but the mechanics behind this were discovered by Smogon.

If an egg is bred from two Pokémon which were created in games of a different language from one another (either by capture or by breeding), the resulting egg is four times as likely to be shiny when it is generated. For example, a Vileplume which was generated in a Japanese game that is bred with a Ditto originating in an English game will result in a higher likelihood of the Oddish that hatches from the egg being shiny.

It will not work if both Pokémon are from the same foreign language, even if it is a different language from the game; or if the player uses one of his or her own Pokémon and the Meister's Magikarp or Lt. Surge's Pikachu, which are obtained through in-game trades. This is because these Pokémon have been generated on the same game as the player's Pokémon. A Pokémon which is traded to a foreign game while still in its egg, even if it is hatched and nicknamed in a foreign language, will also retain the internal marking which registers it as having been generated in the game of the original language.

taken from bulbapedia. Has anyone ever tried this method of getting shinys. The chances are reduced significantly, but its still unlikely. Ive been trying for a siny skorupi for a while (coz it was the first japanise pokemon i found in my box). 2 full boxes of skorupis and still nothing. Have a japanise ditto now so i can use that with my caught pokemon.

Has anyone tried this method before?

I've heard of it but never tried it, though I would like to give it a go sometime.

Even though it's 4 times as likely, that's still only a 1/2048 chance of hatching a shiny, which is an awful lot of eggs! Still, if you use that Ditto for all your breeding from now on, you never know...

Yup, I've tried it, after 300 or so eggs and HG/SS coming out I've not had a shiny or gone back to hatching, shiny Shuckle eludes me once again.

Hmm, interesting. Might have a look on the GTS for a Jap ditto and try it.

Sounds about as good as the PRNG method, which is meant to be a dead cert and left me with a box full of carvanha that were not shiney, had the wrong nature, the wrong gender etc....

Currently trying it with a Japanese Dratini and English Ditto. Will let yous know how I get on :)

make sure you count how many eggs it takes (till you get one or give up) ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,183 ✭✭✭✭Atavan-Halen

Currently hatched about 10 and none so far. I'm expecting to be in it for the long haul so I wasn't expecting to have gotten one so early in. So if anyone needs some Dratinis let me know :pac:

120 eggs and still nothing on my end

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,183 ✭✭✭✭Atavan-Halen

Just an update from me and my Dratinis

Hatched about a box full of them and gave up for a while, started again today and still nothing 2 1/2 PC boxes of Dratinis later. I will say though that they are useful for trade fodder.

Have gone through about 500+ charmanders and and 300+ skarmorys myself and still nothing. Havnt given up just yet, but my god is it tedious. Its almost a pleasure to soft reset for stationary legendaries

I never mentioned it in this thread but I got a shiny Chikorita after 20-25 eggs using jap. and US parents

    Gloat? Moi? :D

Could be pure luck though. I had only encountered one other shiney (in the wild) in that game of diamond after over 600hrs of play. May just have been "my time"....

I just got myself a Japanese Ditto off the GTS so I can breed other things. Unfortunately I think the Ditto is a hack as it was caught with a master ball. Not to worry though, it only cost me another Ditto.

Was also trying chaining on Pearl this evening. All was going well with chaining spoink until f*cking geodude and giraffarig show up 18 chained spoinks later. I got sad and gave up for the evening.

Chaining is good if you have the patience as afaik after 40 chains you have a 1/64 chance of getting a shiny. Masuda is more convenient though as you can just pop in two pokés and get an egg whenever you feel like it. But at the end of the day Masuda does come down to luck.

Bout 6 weeks on and off. 600+ eggs. Funny thing is while i was hatching eggs, i was mainly just walking the raise the happiness of an eevee to get umbreon/espeon

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,485 ✭✭✭✭Banjo

That is pretty cool but 600 eggs? Is it really worth it? Or at least, is it really faster than just SRing a 1st gen respin GBA game? What do you do with the leftovers? (Even when Nuzlocking or doing charity bidoof trades I can't bring myself to let 'em go...)

    Anyway, naysaying aside, nice one!

Most were released, but then i got tanch so the last 200 or so went in there. They will help towards getting mew from it

got this baby last night using this method last night. Only took 85 eggs. Mainly choose magikarp this time as its the easiest to breed, and wanted to finish off the normal/red/shiny Gyarados trio

I've tried that, not the same feeling as OMG a SHINYYYY, when all you do is tap the screen and hatch your egg...

Nothing beats finding it in the wild randomly though, the sense of joy is shockingly amazing

But i suppose for anyone, that wants to speed things up a bit it might be handy, i've tried it several times now... and i cant get it to work :'(
all i want is mah shiny Scyther :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,485 ✭✭✭✭Banjo

One mistake I'm pretty sure I made was tapping the screen to update the breeding app that shows if an egg has appeared. Anything that updates that screen potential alters the rng seed so instead just walk the number of steps it told you to walk before you pick up the egg - the shineyness is defined when you pick it up, not when it appears. If I've misremembered and you don't have to walk X steps before you pick up the egg, you can run a vertical line along the length of the left hand fence that leads from the daycare centre to the long grass north of it. It's about a 20-30 step round trip but it crosses a map border, so the Daycare man gets redrawn - if he's facing right when you come back down he has an egg for you.

@Buzz - It's funny though that you *do* get that ZOMG! feeling from chain breeding or pokeradar chains... I'm sure there's some deep seated psychological reason but somehow when you *could* do all that work and have nothing to show for it but it pays off it's just sweeter. Having said that the RNG method didn't work for me either... :)

    I just hatched:

    Spr_4d_052_s.png

    Using the RNG method!

My first legit (ish) shiny that's all mine! :D I wont be doing that method again as it takes too long but just to let you know it does work!

I'm still plugging away at the dratini's using masuda. Hatched another 12 or so today. I tend to just do it on and off.

    heee
Hatched a shiny Eevee with the RNG method...but ugh..not worth it ...but I do like my shiny eevee :P..

I think I'll leave it to random encounters(if ever any) XD...from now on though.

I'm gonna start off on my quest to hatch a Shiny Bagon with my Jap Charmander later on. :D Shiny Bagons/Salamences are AWESOME.
I hope it doesn't take too long. I'm gonna read up bout it more first. (:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,090 ✭✭✭wobbles

will a good while compared to other pokemon as it takes more steps to hatch them out. See here. Best of luck though, Shiny Salamence is awesome

Ya, I realised that after I posted. I think I'll try a shiny Totodile. xD But I will try for a shiny Bagon after I get used to this method. (: I have a Magmar with flame body so it's okay.

I'm in a fas course for the next 6 weeks so im trying for a shiny castform using masuda.
Just cycling up and down and up and down and up and down and up and down through goldenrod...so much fun!!! :P
I'm breeding with a legit jap spiritomb my bro got from the GTS hatched about 20 so far but i'll keep y'all posted.

Wish me luck...after all that is what its all about! :D

Reviving this topic as im on another MM run. Vulpix this time. 15 boxs and nothing so far. Just have to delete all these as ive run out of empty boxs

  • Registered Users Posts: 41 Rendeva

I'm actually really tempted to try this, but I'll need to figure out which mon to go for first... Definitely not Heracross... Even he isn't manly enough to pull off Magenta...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,090 ✭✭✭wobbles

For your first go, id start with a pokemon that hatches in the least number of steps like magikarp. Make sure you have a pokemon with Magma Armour or similiar to speed up the process.

If you have Black/White the odds are even better of getting a shiny

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,090 ✭✭✭wobbles

Finally got my shiny Vulpix on the 969th egg and a coulpe of million steps. Bit of a marathon but worth it. Next up, ponyta!

Nah, for me it's the Charmander line, just for Black Charizard :D Either that, or the Metagross line.

Just hatched my very first shiny ever, well apart from a meowth that I Rnged for. Was going through pearl looking for pokemon to trade over to black and came across some eggs and decided to hatch them, lo and behold a shiny feebas popped out of one :D
