I wouldn't be much of a political person, but I suppose as you get older you can't help but take an interest, so I wouldn't have known off hand what the usual percentage turnouts are, but 45% seems very low. And especially in times when the country is in a state.

So I did a quick Google and came up with this.

    http://www.idea.int/vt/country_view.cfm?CountryCode=IE

According to that, in the last 50 years turnout hasn't dropped below 66% so if those figures are true I'd say you're waaay off with 45%

Did you just make that number up or are those figures in the list wrong?

I think I had the the memory of poor turnouts in the recent Presidential and European elections in my mind. I had noticed that numbers were dropping but there seems to a marked difference when it comes to parliamentary elections. It looks like turnout has always been higher in those so I stand corrected. If I was a bookie offering a spread at 45% I think I'd be going broke. Looks like it'll be much closer to 65%.

Now I'm as guilty of this as the next person, but there's an argument to be had for saying that that type of attitude has gotten us in the mess that we're in.

I'd agree with that to be honest. I was making a similar point earlier...

Meant to comment on that.I think means testing isnt a good idea for child benefits.Itll only turn people off getting work because as soon as they start working the money earned might not cover the money lost from the loss of child allowance.

Essentially your punishing people who are trying to get ahead by making it almost the same income wise for the people who dont work.

A standard rate should be paid but it could probably be lowered(not sure as i dont have a kid)

This thread moves so fast lately that I miss so much of it. Been busy in work so I don't get a chance to reply to a lot of suff. But yeah, there's only one thing that politicians truly understand and that's elections. I really hate the tribal nature of politics, i.e. "I've always voted FF/FG/Labour, etc. so I always will"

In fairness though, that's how most people will feel. But you have to start somewhere, and even if that's making sure that the clowns that presided over the whole mess don't get in again, at least it's something.

Situations like that suck a55. I know of one or two people that it works out for them better financially by not working. One lad actually gets paid more on the dole than he does for working. It's so stupid that he's actually looking forward to the weeks where he's on a 3 day week as opposed to a 4 day/full week.

Haha, I feel your pain...what little time I have left for visiting boards is usually consumed by catching up on this thread. Type slower people!!!

/ off to find what else i've missed...

i simply had no choice, but im glad it was the case as it taught me a good lesson

Sure you may as well give the speech and let us know what you're thinking…

Seriously, I can't understand anyone who doesn't use their democratic right to vote. It's insane. Vote for SF, FF, FG or Lab, I don't care who you vote for but vote. Equating politics to football is pretty daft as well. You might find both of them boring, fair enough but football hasn't quite got the ability to bring a country down the way politics has. Would what has happened in the last couple of weeks not convince you that you have to be more politically engaged? I know people are repeating the mantra 'It doesn't matter who's in power' but it will. If someone is repeatedly kicking me in the balls, I'm not going to just stand there and keep letting him do it, am I?

Look, me personally, I can't flipping wait for the election. I'm going to be poised and ready behind my front door waiting for the FF and FG campaigners to come along…

    Hahaha.....

The last time they were out canvasing for the elections the local FF'er got that treatment alright,

Opened the door & before he got a word out of his trap i said to him clamly but directly,
    Me wrote:
You may aswell save your breath & time, mark this house down on your card as never to be bothered with again by you or your party cause it will be a cold day in hell before FF get a vote out of here.

Was a very satifying i must say & i hope they call back again this time round:D

I know what you're saying - I vote the majority of the time, but I think the whole system is wrong and there's no way for me to express that through the ballot box.

I'll put my hands up - I voted for the Greens last go round. What a chump I feel like now.

At this stage I've lost all respect for all political parties. It would appear to me that the vast majority of people who go into politics are the exact type of people who shouldn't.

Did you see Frontline last night? I thought the 'What's article 7 of the FF constitution?' question was great, as usual though the muppet Kenny cuts him off and let's the FFer off the hook.

One things for damn sure though - Fianna Fail are going nowhere, they'll come out fighting.

this is the thing with politics. the kind of people who go into it are almost by definition the last people you'd want in there.

speaking of which, any of you's know how hard it is to get put down as a candidate in the upcoming general election?

woah, woah, woah....."you's" ?????, really JT? Surely an own goal in the 'pedant's corner' game.

And I think you need a certain amount of support signatures from your local electorate before you can get the ball rolling, IIRC anyway. This usually isn't an issue if you're affiliated with a party.

    Not that hard,

Brian cowen is an ugly, dribbling, lying wan.ker

See how i put him down there easily:D

No seriously, you need the recommendation of the local party branch having confidence in you, then it needs to go to HQ for approval if there is more than one candidate & then you need a load of cash from the branch funds & that will be part subsidised by HQ.

But with your oown account of your persuasions jeff you would be a right wing lefty anarchist:confused:

I'd say I'd last 5-6 minutes in that place. 'Deputy Timoney', 'Deputy Timoney, sit down!!', 'Remove the Deputy!' [cue kicking screaming and probably a comment that upsets everyone at the same time].

I'm fairly sure the term 'cúnt' falls under unparliamentary language and despite by sizeable vocabulary and articulate nature (ha), I'd really find it difficult not to address anybody by that term in there. the cúnts.

I actually use that quite deliberately as the English language is fcukin stupid for not having a you plural word.

It's one thing northsiders have given the world.

    More like,

'Deputy Timoney', 'Deputy Timoney, release deputy cowen from that headlock & stop using him as leverage to drop kick deputy lenihan in the face.

btw, i'm running under the ideas of...

'state casinos, state brothels, decriminalisation of every drug (lil bit of taxing- don't worry you'll still get decent yokes for under a tenner), the public lynching of yer man from the WiMax ad, abolition of closing times, and outlawing the phrase "going forward".

Vote early, vote often, or whatever they say yeah.

I'm running on a pro-Christian platform promoting abstinence, piety and praying for our economy. Then when I'm elected I'm going to legalise abortion, drugs, public nudity and compulsory nipple piercings for all - I don't even like piercings myself but I reckon they'd be guaranteed to upset a lot of people.

not gonna go as a labour candidate tbh (unless they offer me a big load of wedge for the campaign). Thinking of setting up the Rational party. No civil war bollocks, no Irish language translations of shtuff, just sound fiscal sense and that's it.
Oh and I'll be taking back all the schools etc. from the Catholic church. That will be the state's compensation for all the messin they got up to.
Oh and no more religion being taught in school. Evolutionary biology instead.

Were you talking about in general JT or as a party candidate?

I've no idea of the process, but I'd be interested to hear, especially from an independents point of view.
