Shirt and tie combination for wedding

I'm attending a wedding in a couple of months and would like some opinions on what to wear.

The groom has said he wants to see a bit of variation and not a sea of black suits and ties with a white shirt!

With that in mind I'd like to go with a dark navy pinstripe suit (worsted wool, high twist, single breast, double vent) as I've had it tailored so the fit is excellent. It's also of a higher quality material than my other suits.

So I'd like your input on the shirt and tie combination. Given that the suit is striped I'd prefer to keep one of either the shirt or the tie plain but I can be swayed. Otherwise fire away with colours and patterns!

I'll probably wear a pocket square too so ideas on that would also be appreciated.

Some background info if it helps with contrasting colours etc: 6ft, dark hair, tanned.

    2cents appreciated, thanks!

I think a white tie like this would look nice with a navy pinstripe suit-especially if the stripes are skinny white ones.

    -with a white pocket square.

Other colours that may go with navy are

    Pale Pink:

    Or

    SILVER:

If you're going for more stripes I would choose them on the tie only.
Stripy shirt, and pinstriped suit might be a bit too much together.

I think a solid pink, double-cuff shirt would look well with a navy pin-stripe. I'd wear a navy tie with some pink in it. You could wear cufflinks, which match the colour of the pinstripe.

As for the pocket square, I'm of the opinion that anything goes. Etro have some really nice ones at the moment, but if you don't want to spend €60 on one, you could try Dalvey. I'd just try to bring the outfit together with it i.e. no clashing colours.

For a wedding, with a pinstripe suit I would strongly recommend that you wear a solid shirt and leave the pattern to the tie.

If you're ruling out a white shirt, which if you are tanned would be a shame, then you are in the realms of the following:

    - pale blue shirt, burgundy tie (perhaps with a subtle gold pattern)

    - pale pink shirt, grey/silver tie with pale blue pattern

    - cream shirt, pale blue tie

    - pale grey/silver shirt, pink tie

Flowered patterns are always nice for wedding ties; if you prefer a striped tie then make sure the stripes are very wide in order to contrast against the suit's pinstripes.

Ideally, let the pocket square reflect a secondary colour from the tie or a different shade of the shirt's colour, but it should not match either the shirt or the tie precisely.

Well you seem to have a good idea of what you want so you'll probably be fine. But for anyone who's interested, I found this article good:

I love coming to threads like this and finding that I can't add any more to the great advice already given.

Thanks a mill for the advice ;)

I prefer to wear spread/cut away collared shirts so I try to avoid skinny ties - I don't think they look right with that collar, even with a full windsor.

I do like the idea of a pink shirt with navy/pink striped tie and already have sets of cufflinks that can go with either the suit or the shirt colour.

I only have a few pocket squares but I'll invest in one or two more.

I've no problem wearing a white shirt with this suit, so combinations with that are a possibility too.

    Thanks again all.

I'm a big fan of Ted Baker shirts or Duchamp. Fantastic material, cuts, colours and designs.

    Well worth the investment.
